I'm shooting a really super ultra mega low budget film next month with a Canon XL2. I'm having some headaches figuring out the best way to approach the dialogue recording.
The mics I have access to are a Sony ECM 44B Omni Lavalier, an Audio Technica ATM 873R Handheld Microphone, and an Audio Technica AT-835B shotgun. The production has about half indoor, half outdoor dialogue setups, a few interior car scenes and a little bit of voice over narration.
I'm wondering, what would be the best mics to use in those situations during production? The bad thing is this is so low budget that I'm going to have to do the audio recording myself while shooting as well. Would it be a bad idea to split the output of one of these mics into both XLR inputs on the back of the XL2, then set each input to a slightly different audio level, so as to have a bracket of sorts? Does anyone do this? If so, what sort of splitter could I use?
I'm just worried about being able to ride the levels accurately during shooting since I'm wearing two hats it's hard to monitor both at the same time. Bad, I know. Would I be better off recording the audio on the XL2 through XLR jack(s) or on an external source such as mini disk?
A lot of questions, I know. I'll keep browsing the forum for clues but if you have any advice to share, I'd greatly appreciate it.
