Splitting a clip up

I have some questions about the functionality of vegas. I probably won't remember everything I want to ask, but I'll ask this one simple question first. Lets say I have a couple of video tracks and several audio tracks. And I select a section and want to create splits on each end, so I hit the s key on my keyboard. But it splits all the tracks under and above! I know how to just split up the track i'm on by clicking on the specific clip and then moving to where I want and hitting s, But I want to be able to select and make splits on each side on only one video track. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Splitting a clip up

I'm not sure I follow. If you know how to isolate the clips to split only the ones you want, what's the question? What do you mean by splits on each end?

Re: Splitting a clip up

you know how you can highligh a portion of the clip? Like when you make a loop region. Well when you hit the s key with that highlighted, it makes splits on both ends of the loop region and then you can simply hit the delete key and delete the portion you don't want very fast. But the problem, is when you do this, you delete the same region or at least create splits on the same region on all the other tracks. I want to do the same thing with just the track i'm working with.

TO clarify what I know how to do now....it is simply making one split at a time on a single track, without interferring with the other tracks.....and then deleting that section...but this takes much longer than doing what i mentioned above does. I just wish I was able to do it with just the track I want.

Re: Splitting a clip up

but than that is the only one I see right? I guess that's fine, but sometimes I would like to just edit one track, but be able to see and hear the rest of them. Thanks for your help.

Re: Splitting a clip up

First SELECT the track you want to EDIT.  Not just the left TRACK LIST, but the actual TRACK.  Then, make your LOOP and then SPLIT it.

Thanks John, just did it. That's really what I needed to know. Works great. Just guess I missed that little tidbit along the way to learning this program. So much more to know! I have been doing it the slow way this whole time thinking (There has to be a better way than this!) At least a way that doesn't split up all your other tracks!! Thanks again.

This board has been a lifesaver countless # of times!!

Vegas is a very easy interface to learn and there are many ways in which to accomplish the same thing; I guess it is what works best for each person!

Re: Splitting a clip up

Here are the rules for splitting under the cursor:

Nothing selected: Everything gets split
Everything selected: Everything gets split
Whatever is selected: Only they get split

To split at two points, as you have discovered, you can use a time selection. If you make the time selection BEFORE selecting the event(s) you want to split, first hit Ctrl/Shif/A to deselect everytning, then Ctrl/Click what you want to select. This will select without disturbing the cursor position or turing off the time selection.

If what you are after is to delete the event pieces to the left and right of the time selection, a quicker way would be to use Ctrl/T which does the split and deletion in on stroke.
