split focus lenses

Anyone knows a place where one can rent split focus lenses (preferable in NYC). So that i can have half the screen focusing on something close to the lens and other half focusing on something far.

Are you looking for split field diopters?

Arri's Master Diopters are pretty nice. You can get them at Arri CSC in NY. Not sure if they make split field, which is what you need. I'm sure Arri CSC has split fields, despite who makes them.

Diopter strengths is based on meters, if I remember correctly it's based off one meter.

If you focus on infinity, a .5+ diopter is something like two meters, a +1 diopter is one meter, a +2 diopter focuses to about 1/2 a meter, and a +3 diopter is about a third of a meter.

Since a meter is 3.3ft (rounded), I suppose when focusing to infinity a +.5 diopter would have half of the image focused at around 6'8" feet, a +1 diopter would be 3"4", a +2 diopter would be about 1'8", and a +3 would be 16" or 1'4".

I think if I were to use them, the +.5 and the +1 would be my choice, however you never know when you need the closer... but a +3 diopter at infinity and 16" is going to be a rare shot.

B&H has Schneider Series 9 (82.6 mm) split field diopters for $235 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/398981-REG/Schneider_68072509_Series_9_Water_White.html). Step down to 77mm rings by Tiffen & others.

If you're feeling cheap Cokin makes split field for their P series for about $26; and I think hoya makes mm size in glass too.

And Abel Cine rents Tiffen sets. As far as I know split field is split focus ie a filter half clear glass on one side and a diopter of some strength on the other half permtting different focus distance.

I thought he was talking about split-focus diopters, like the ones M. David Mullen, ASC used in Akeelah and the Bee.

Foreground subject (Akeelah) and background subject (teachers at table) are in focus. Slight blur at the camera-left edge of the table.

Split field diopters are the same thing. Must be a regional thing as far as what they're called.

My favorite two, I posted in another thread here at DVXuser. It's the scene where the dad is building a mountain with his mashed potatoes in profile while the kid's reaction is in the background in Close Encounters, and when Butch is being chased my marcellus, and he rounds a quick corner and breaths deeply before continuing to run in Pulp Fiction.

I got me a cheap $40 adapter off of ebay - will let you know how it performs - since my intention is to use it in a more abstract way - clarity of colors or sharpness or contrast aren't really that important so technically superior glass is of no importance.
