The Hoya Split-Field filter consists of a close-up lens cut in half. Half of the filter is a close-up lens while the other half is open. With this filter, one-half of the photo receives a close-up effect while the other half is normal. In this way, it is possible to have both very close and far subjects in focus at the same time. Or, one-half of the picture can be out of focus for special effects. Commonly used for floral and landscape photography where sharpness near and far is important.

Re: Split field filter for fuzzy backs

I've only had a few chances to use split diopters on 35mm film cameras, I've never used them on a 1/3" DV camera before.

I don't know if you'll get the results I'm guessing you're looking for with this. Every time I've used split diopters, it's been to DEEPEN the depth of field, not make it shallowet; to bring a forground object into focus with a background element, like the photo on the B&H link you posted.

I suppose you might be able fake it the way you're looking to do, but testing would be in order. I can't say for sure.

Re: Split field filter for fuzzy backs

It can work.

some difficulties, you might see the cut line, and it can not align exactly like you want but It's a good trick, and something we used to do w/ 16mm to make it look like 35.

If you test that let us know how it works out. That would be an intresting way to solve some of the cams DOF "problems" everyone has been talking about...
