just wondering if anyone knows how to get that spielberg look. The look im mean is what his latetest films have sort of looked like. Most recently munich, war of the worlds, minority report. I guess he uses some some sort of diffuser to get a nice glow from the blown out parts of the shot. wondering if anyone knows how to get this look.

This thread should be called "Kaminski look."

A lot of that "glow" you see is the result of a specific lens, and how it reacts to the extreme ranges of light, particularly the highlights. Additionally, different stocks and ASA's will affect how those blown out portions will show up on the negative.

My recommendation is to just get out their and start simulating what you see the best you can, and experimenting with your camera.

I think if one is originating with a DVX, that look is mostly going to be obtained in post.

You think?

I did a look for something a few years back... i was kinda going for the LOTR look of some shots. You can do it, or get close to a look like that in FCP or AE. You just have to start playing around with stuff.

I think what i did was i doubled the clip up a few times, and tweaked a bunch of different things like contrast and brightness, and then changed the blending modes. With enough monkeying around... you can get your image to look like whatever you want.

You could also just get some fancy shmancy plugins that do it all for you.

If you don't have $10-20K for the right lens, Magic Bullet has some presets that have an effect with a similar character to what I think you're going for. You'll want to tweak them a bit, though; they tend to be a bit over the top so that people can more easily see what's happening in them.

Come to think of it, they actually have a template CALLED "Munich."

Cheers,

Mike
