Hi guys!
I need some help.

I need to buy a shoulder support. Right now I don't have any extra stuff like an lcd monitor, mattebox etc. Is the spiderbrace a good choice? considering it only costs about $90 in total?

what do you recommend?

EDIT:
The question is, Is it good with a SGpro adapter?

Many uses it, Smetti, Oedipax and myself, but last with a M2.

But for starter, a Spiderbrace is good, but with many accessories attached you want a Cavision shoulder and handles, and that’s just around ~150$ more.

So good luck...

Did smettli use a spiderbrace?
I thought he had the cavision..?

I think the m2 is heavier than the SGpro.

nice..

Thank you:smile:

Yeah, it'll get the job done but you'll probably want something more elaborate as you expand your rig. Supporting the weight of the camera and SGpro + trying to keep the camera movements relatively smooth + pulling focus on the front of your lens (assuming you're not using a follow focus yet) gets to be a chore after a while! You have to work a lot harder to "forget" about the physical aspects of the camera and focus on what you're shooting than if you were just going with the stock DVX and nothing else.

I think he started out with the Spiderbrace and has since upgraded. I plan to follow suit pretty soon! Adapter-buyers beware: the spending doesn't end when you get the adapter - it's actually just the beginning :)

oh that is so true.. so true..

i'm using the spiderbrace with rails and the letus extreme.. it works, but the grip pad is wearing away quite quickly.

I love my spiderbrace. I've upgraded to my Zacuto rig recently... but the spiderbrace is cool and light as ever. Over at Cinevate, they have a rig that uses the spiderbrace. I just can't login to my account for some reason. Anyway, it's very possible to use the spiderbrace with your adapter rigs (Cinevate or Redrock) or your IndieSystems baseplate. You should be able to get a follow focus, your camera, and a 35mm DOFA on there with no problems. Anything past that... UPGRADE!

I own both the SG and SB. They were not made for eachother. I wouldn't do it as I find Spiderbraces baseplate/screw dicey for a 13-14lb rig. I use mine all the time with my HVX on it's own and it often slides. SB should have a wider footbprint for it's base and a half inch screw.

Try this. Get some extension rods for the rear - put a knee pad on it for your shoulder. Clamp a cardellini the front rods for a grip and voila - your hand held.

If that's too bootleg. Get a some kind of rod mount base with a 3/8" or half inch hole. Get a piece of bracing metal from Home Depot, you know the 1' x 1/8" by 8" to a 12" steel bar with holes in it that they use to brace two pieces of wood together. Attach that to the rod mount ala nut/bolt and then at each end bolt on some BMX pegs for hand grips. It'll be totally Hot Rod and everyone will want to take it for a spin.

Let me know if it works. It'll definitely smoke a Spider Brace. PVC vs Metal. Metal wins.

Dennis posted the below picture on here a while back. So obviously you can adapt to using the Spiderbrace to your needs. I'm with Tim however. How much would it suck if the screw snapped and the HVX went toppling.... I'd probably roll over and die.

Recently I've been saying... you do what works for you and your budget and the risks your willing to take.

I don't know about the SB and the SG - but I'm running a DVX-100b, Letus Extreme, InfiFOCUSpro, and 18" IndiRAILS with a DVRigPro HD and it works great so far.

Very balanced and the rig is flexible for going low-angle - ie. off the shoulder.

It may be out of your price range though if you're only looking at $90 - but you get what you pay for ;)

Check it out at:

new idea... rails implants... we surgically install a rails mount on your right shoulder. It is reinforced throughout your body via carbon fibre connections to bones... no more troubles with shoulder supports... only concern... balance

on a more serious note: what's your pricerange? That seems to dictate what solution we recommend.

I have a spiderbrace with the exact same setup as you and it works great.

Hard on the arms after a while but it gets the job done. Im hoping to get a cavision soon. If you have the money now I would go for that.

But also factor in cost for a monitor....and a battery for said monitor....and an arm for said monitor....ect ect.

Also... the StillMotion guys from Canada use spiderbraces with their Brevis, Canon Cam, and Monitors. So obviously... the spiderbrace can handle it. It's whether YOU, the filmmaker, can handle the powa of the spida!
