Speeding up footage

When going to playback properties, you are limited to 4x playback, what is the best way to speed up footage?

thx

Adjusting the playback rate, you can go to 4x.

Using a velocity envelope, you can go up to 3x.

Combined, you can go up to 12x.

If you need to go faster, there's a couple of options:
1) Render the 12x version and then speed up the newly rendered clip.
2) Use a script such as the Time Bandit tool found in both the Veggie Toolkit and Excalibur.

Why would someone want to play it back at 4x, when the rendered version won't actually play that fast unless you use velocity envelope, etc.?

What do you mean by " the rendered version won't actually play that fast unless you use velocity envelope"?

If you right click the clip and go into properties you'll find you can set it up to 400% playback. Then you can put the velocity envelope to 300%.

4x3=12

12 times faster in total once rendered.

Ooooh. I thought play back was referring to watching the entire project at 4x speed. Didn't know you could actually take the clip & force it to play back 4x faster within the rest of the project.

Is there a quality difference between using the velocity envelope at 300% vs. adjusting the properties to 3x playback? Difference in render times?

There should be no difference when speeding up. There may be a slight difference when slowing down. However, I just use whichever is most convenient or practical. Usually I just hold down the CTRL key and resize the clip. If you need to go slower than than 25%, you MUST use a velocity envelope. Also, the velocity envelope is more flexible as it can dynamically change speeds.

Thanks. I'm very comfortable with the velocity envelope ... just never heard of speeding up footage using the other method. I'll keep it in mind if I ever want my footage off the charts sped up.
