Speeding up 24pa footage?

My footage loooks terrible. All my horizontal lines have jaged edges.

I'm speeding up to 300%
FCP HD 4.5

Any tips to help the footage look crisp instead of zig-zagy?

Any help would be great.

Re: Speeding up 24pa footage?

Yes two both questions...
DV NTSC 48kHz - 23.98
DV NTSC 48kHz - 23.98 Advanced (2:3:3:2)

It's not just on spedup footage.

It really stands out on most of the horizontal lines.

I know the camera is capable of crisp horizontal lines so it must be user error.

I just cant seem to find the problem.

Thanks,

Kip

Re: Speeding up 24pa footage?

I think the problem happens when the footage goes into the timeline.

When it's in the viewer it appears to be ok...when it's in the canvas the lines get all zebra-ey.

AV settings
Seq preset:23.98
Capt Preset: Adv 2:3:3:2

Dev control: Firewire NTSC
Vid Playback: Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480)
Audio: Firewire DV

SYSTEM Settings

RT: Safe
Video Quality: High
Pulldown Pattern 2:3:3:2
Frame Offset 4
Record: Full Quality

Thanks for any help.

Re: Speeding up 24pa footage?

I've found something curious..maybe this can help you help me.

When I look at the footage in the viewer it's OK

When I put the footage in the timeline/canvas it's also OK

When I render...that's when the zig zag-ey diagonal lines appear.

Does this help you ar anyone else out there figure out what setting is messed up?

Once again..any helpwould be aprecated.

Re: Speeding up 24pa footage?

I forgot to mention that my sequence was playing over a Slug that I desaturated to make white. When I rendered it made the zig zag-ey lines appear.

So I deleted the Slug and the zig-zags went away.

I'm guessing that's not the best way to make a white background...I'll be posting soon to find out the best way to do that.

Re: Speeding up 24pa footage?

Are you speeding your clips with the Time remap tool? I thought 200% was the maximum you could speed something up anyway. I use the Time remap tool to speed clips up and its nice and smooth providing I shot it nice and smooth.

Re: Speeding up 24pa footage?

I used the time remap up to 10,000% on a clip for a minidoc I did while in Kauai... basically a time lapse... turned over an hour of footage into 36 seconds.... I was AMAZED at how beautiful it came out. Smooth as could be.

It's 88MB and can be downloaded here to see the effect... it's the fist 30 seconds or so of the vid

Todd very very nice!!! Is that with the DVX? Very pro nice work man!!! I would love to see that whole thing!

Re: Speeding up 24pa footage?

I like it, especially when you cosider that it was done in 24 hours start to finish including writing / audio composition / special effects / editing / voice over / the whole shebang... other than shooting the footage which was done over a two week period (really only about 4 days of shooting and it was all just run and gun, no tripod, no accessories, just the camera and a UV filter)

Its also my first project with the DVX, I just recently graduated from using (it's embarrasing to admit, but a Sony PC100 and uh ummm... Microsoft Movie Maker)

And, that is the whole thing... for now. I did it for the "contest" at Marty Martins website (http://www.imagenfilms.com) and the limit was 5 minutest... the project is 4:59:15 with the credits

I have several more hours of footage that I will EVENTUALLY create an extended version with.

Glad you liked it!
