speed problem

whenever i change the speed of a clip in the timeline, it changes the position of the following clips on the complete timeline.

Please advice how to change the speed of a clip without effecting the placement of the following clips.

thanks

essbee,

If you change the speed of the clip on the timeline that's what is supposed to happen. Either you slow it down and FCP needs more space so shifts things to the right, or you speed it up and FCP looks to keep the clips with the same spacing, relatively, and so shifts everything to the left.

The ways around this are doing things like changing the speed in the viewer and then cutting in from there after you've changed the speed (not recommend though, just say that I've had to clean up after others that have done it). I think there's also another work around using like the fit to fill or such somehow. Been a while since I messed with that little trick, so perhaps someone else can detail that for you, or give you a tutorial link.

cheers.

You could place the clip that you're speed-changing on its own video track, then lock all the other tracks while you change the speed. Locking the tracks should keep them from changing.

Exactly.

thanks all of you.

does that mean that we can not change the speed of the clip without effecting the timeline?

Well... yes, and no. There's no "off" switch if that's what you're looking for. But, like "stas" mentioned, you can easily just place the clip in it's own track, lock all the other tracks, and change speed/duration of the clip.

With the other tracks locked, they won't be affected.

i usually have a seperate sequence specifically for edits like this. then i don't have to worry about locking the tracks each time i make a change, i just cut the clip from the sequence, paste it on my "EDITS" sequence, make the change, and then copy (or cut, if you don't want to leave a trail of it) and paste it back into your main sequence. this way theres no chance of forgetting to lock a track and having everything on that track affected. works pretty well for me.

Me to, first thing I do in every project is make a Seqeunce called Temp Workspace for doing all this type of stuff. It allows me to do quick experiments without the hassle, or danger of messing up my working Sequences.
