Specific Location Scouting

I'm going to be shooting a short film this summer ( first official production ). I'm set on a location 5 hours away from where I currently live. The location is an old abandoned house in the middle of a field. Next to it is a regular looking house on a farm. ( the abandoned house looks like it would be owned by the same people )

My question is, how would I go about looking into filming at this location? Who would I contact to get permission to film at that location?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Find out who owns it (asking the neighbor probably a good start) then get them to sign an agreement giving you permission to shoot there, which may or may not involve you giving them money and proof of insurance.

I would strongly consider inquiring as to why it's abandoned. It may be entirely unsafe.

Even if they say it's structurally sound, you need to do a thorough inspection for anything dangerous, like jagged nails sticking out, loose floorboards, etc. (Or wasp nests, for that matter.)

I'd also be highly concerned about the wiring.

Great Idea! thanks gonzo

Go in VERY pro. Dress like you were going to a job interview, think about questions they would ask and have answers, have pre-printed forms ready and maybe business cards, anything that gives the impression "This guy is a professional, not some yahoo who wants to destroy my house".

That is something I hadn't thought of, I'll definitely look out for that thanks.

Yes. I had already been planning to do that. I will also have someone with me as my " associate ".

Contact the municipality to track down the owner of the property.
If the owner doesn't have liability insurance buy some coverage for the shoot.
Stuff can happen, especially in what appears to be a condemned dwelling.
