Special Effects question

In Final Cut Pro, is there any way to slice a frame in half and combine it with another frame. Like if you wanted to make it look like someone was talking to his twin - you shoot one persons half of the scene and dont move the camera and shoot the other persons half of the scene, and then splice the 2 to make it appear as if they are talking to each other (this isnt my reason for doing it, but its the example I can think of, outside of my use for it.)

If so, do you have to do one frame at a time or can you do it to the entire clip.

If this cannot be done in final cut, do you know of a program that can do it?

Re: Special Effects question

Hey man, what you want to do is put both clips in the timeline, one on top of the other for a 2 layered comp. Then, use a garbage matte or any other masking utility to essentially cut a hole in the top layer to see what's below it.

For best results you should use a tripod and make sure your lighting doesn't change. Less change = less work in compositing this type of scene.

And don't you dare ever again say final cut can't do anything. haha.
good luck

Re: Special Effects question

You can also resize your clips. Stack the 2 clips as was stated above then adjust the scale and aspect ratio of the clips to get both clips to fit onto the same screen. This will look more like a split screen. You can feather the edges of the clips so that it blends into the other clip rather than being a hard edge. Not sure if this is what you meant though.

Re: Special Effects question

Thanks for all you help guys. I need to use this special effect for 2 scenes in my movie. I'm shooting May/June 2005. If I make it good enough I can get it into the right hands in Hollywood. I have a coworker who is good friends w/ Scott Rosenberg (screenwriter of such movies as 'Things to do in Denver When You're Dead,' 'Con Air,' and 'Beautiful Girls'), so as I'm sure you can guess, I'm excited as hell to make this movie.

Re: Special Effects question

ha sorry your post just struck me as funny.. it reminded me of the guy on the Simpsons who always says: "You may remember me from such films as..."

Re: Special Effects question

...Hi, I'm Troy McLure. You may remember me from such films as: "So, You Want to be a Street Bum" and "Garbage! a Good Place to Live!"

Re: Special Effects question

I'm not saying I'm gonna make it because of who I know, but it's a step in the right direction.  Filmmaking is all of have - if I don't succeed at it, I'll be that bum is see chillin in front of the Brockton courthouse every Tuesday.  What do you want from me?  I guess we're all eternal optomists aren't we?

Re: Special Effects question

A simple strategy might be to try twiddling the overlaid video clip's crop settings, too. You'll find this in the Viewer's "Motion" tab (for whatever reason).
