speakers

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a good set of speakers for editing. Not specializing in sound editing but something good for an all round fcp editor.

I use M-Audio 4" powered speakers. Cant remember the model. I think I paid 200 for them. Thay are far from high end, but they work for me.

I've the the KRK Rokit 5's. Pretty accurate for video work. They really do reveal alot more "information" that's hidden in my sound. I think I paid $200 new for a pair on ebay two years ago.

It depends on what you want to do. Powered speakers don't need any other help, but if you want input, that's another story. THere have been a number of threads about audio interfaces in this forum. I use a presonus firebox. Which is plenty for me. You can go bigger (more inputs), or get something with a dedicated mixing board. But for basic video/sound effects editing, you probably don't need that much.

I find a mixer very useful on the desktop to route different signals to the powered speakers so you can select what you want to monitor.

I use a little 12 channel berhinger ...

Yamaha HS50M Active monitors ($299 each)
Mackie 1404

The new Mackie mixers have USB automation
(very cool)

Are we talking only stereo, or surround?

Yes, overall Mackies are awesome. When Kurzweil (highest end music workstation synth maker) calibrates their systems, they use Mackies.

I dont need suround sound I cant properly arrange 5 speakers and a sub woofer in my small editing room. also sorry for the dumb question as I am not a sound editor but find myself having to do sound more and more often. is a mixer really a good investment for an edit suite if you dont specialize in sound. I dont mind the fcp in computer mixer but I suppose things could run smoother with a mixer I can actualy manualy operate.

All I use a mixer for is merely for routing different signals into the powered speakers.

I use (2) computers side-by-side, so for instance I can monitor my audio/graphics workstation computer or my editing computer using the same powered speakers. I also have my digitizing DV deck's audio going through mixer to allow monitoring of the firewire deck's analog audio output during editing instead of the editing computer's audio output.
