Speakers for the computer

You always want to mix to the lowest common denominator. Make it sound good on crappy speakers and you will have a really good starting mix. Old engineer's trick .

Yeah, a little off topic, but that info needs to be re-inforced every now and then.

You rang Doc. I remember we used to dub the final mix to an audio cassette and go out to the car park and listen in a car. Today folk use a CD etc.

Always use the clients car and give him the best spot under cover, in case it rains and drowns out your mix .. let him sit in the front too

Cheers.

This thread is a few months old, and just wondering what you got.
And I am interested in knowing what would be better, the M-adio av40 or the Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II 2.0 ?
I want to keep in the 140$ price range. And yes I will use them for editing. If the audio needs more attention, I use my MK2 headphones. It might not be what the pros use, but it works for me.
So if you know of a computer speaker system around 140 or suggest the M-adio av40 or the Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II 2.0, please let me know.

Thank you.

Editing with headphones is fine but for mixing you really do need the accuracy of true monitor SPEAKERS. Headphones will lead to a seriously out of balance mix. And since you need actual monitor speakers for the mix you might as well use them for the edit. My personal choice is the JBL Pro LSR4328P. If you need something a little more compact, the LSR4326P is a very close second. Both of them will exceed your stated budget better than 10 fold for the pair but if you're serious about your work you need to bite the bullet and insist on the right tools.

I just thought I would mention, for my editing, it is documentaries, speakers, nature, and adding pre-made music tracks. I am not doing sound editing like piano or bands, just video editing. Not sure if that would make a difference. And my office is very small.

No, it doesn't make a difference. You're going to take all the elements and blend them together into the final mixed soundtrack. To do that properly, you must hear the mix on proper monitor speakers. You wouldn't try to colour balance the video on a screen tinted green, would you? Well, not using accurate monitors is the same sort of thing only for sound.

I read that the M-Audio® AV 40 produces heat in the left speaker, and many wrote in the reviews of their speakers not working after such a time.
Any experience with these speakers?
Do they take a lot of energy?
Not sure what to believe from reviews sometimes from Amazon.

Thanks

Still not sure about the M-Audio AV 40. I read they produce heat in the left speaker and problems I read on reviews on Amazon. If you have any experience with these speakers, let me know.
Or if you have experience with Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II 2.0 Multimedia Speaker System.
Still looking for around 100$ speaker system that does not use a huge amount of power, or produce heat for my small office, and fits nice on my desk.

at around $100 they will roughly be of similar quality, and you dont have a lot of choices, will they compare to studio monitors? NO but they will get you by.

the most important thing to remember is to 'LEARN' your monitors and understand how they sound. and how they translate to other playback systems.

pick one and run with it.

Cheers
