Speakers for my Mac

Hi

I'm editing my film on my G4 Dual 1Ghz and I need to get better speakers as when I output my film and played it through my DVD player you could spot real bad sound issues that weren't obvious on my Mac speakers.

What speakers do you use and are there any recommendations?

i recommend the ones from apple shops for about 80 bucks, made by jbl i think they are called creatures and the black set have a bass unit that looks darth vaders head, they sound great

in the end i went for some studio reference monitors by Fostex, they are designed to give great seperation when doing a mix. They are big and ugly but when you're doing a mix it seems you need this sort of kit.

I also looked at reference monitors by M-Audio (part of Avid) and some really nice (but pricey) Genelec speakers, in case anyone else is looking!

Which Fostex model? How are you routing the audio from your Mac to your speakers? Best way would be if you had a good audio interface that feeds your monitors(speakers). Not so great way would be running from DV deck directly to speakers. My guess is you are running from Mac to mixer and then to speakers. If so, curious what mixer.

I love my Harman Kardon Soundsticks II. Easily the best sounding $200 system I've heard. Heck, they sound almost as good as my Denon/JBL home theater system. Seriously, you have to listen to believe.

Although, I'm guessing you would want good monitors for sound editing, not something to listen to music with and I have yet to get me some.

I got the Fostex PM2, I was recommended the M-audio monitors, but on listening to them in the store they sounded very cloudy in comparison to the Fostex.

They are hooked up via my DV deck. Why would you recommend going via a mixer? what are the benefits?

A couple of reasons not to run from deck. One would be that you might not have an easy way to control volume. I know you have input level control but you want a volume control. Second is that you might be running unbalanced output (depends on the deck). You should try to run a balanced line from your mixer/interface to the speakers.

These are just suggestions though, don't take them as anything more than that. Ultimately do whatever works best for your situation.

I've got a pair of M-Audio Bx8a's. I love 'em. I run them through a presonus firepod interface. It was about a grand for the setup. If you make your own soundtracks, and want to record live instruments, it's worth the investment. The preamps on the Presonus are solid. Definitely not top of the line, but the setup sounds great to my ears. I'm hearing things in mixes now that I've never heard before on my old computer speakers.

I agree, the soundsticks form harmon kardon are the best, by far... and you can get them from www.buy.com for like $135. They are bad-ass and everyone who hears them can't believe how great the sound, and I use them to edit in fcp as well...
