Speaker covers

I know this is probably a stupid question, but is there any impact by leave the covers on the front of your speakers. I've noticed that most pro monitors I've seen don't have them on, and I was wondering if they actually serve a specific function other than protecting to speaker from dust etc. Does it make a difference if you leave them on?

Anything you put in front of the speakers alters the sound. Speaker grills are mainly for protection and aesthetics.

I used to use a pair of pretty cheap powered monitors, they were small and sounded OK but I was on a budget. One day I "discovered" that the grills just slide off. WOW what a difference. Still not fantastic, but much more open and "transparent". With the grills on they sound a touch muffled and dull.

So anyway, unless there is a very good reason to have the grills on, small kids like to push in on the shinny tweeter dome, keep the grills off.

Now I actually like cats a lot ...but the first time you see a male back up to your speaker with his tail high... You start to wonder how they might taste with a nice barbecue sauce.
