Spartan

Saw this the other day and thought it was pretty good. I thought it was an extremely well-written script (as are most of Mamets) and great acting. Although I thought some of the aspects in it were a little weak, all-in-all I thought it was a solid film.

Re: Spartan

Though this space has been bursting with commentary about the Bush Administration, "Spartan" is pretty damn scathing toward Dubya, no? Capturing the essense of the Patriot Act and Ashcroft's obsession with sex slavery, Mamet turned news into a B-Movie schizo satire. The current obsession about Bush winning re-election (which has led conspiracy theorists to say that Bush will parade Bin Laden in front of Americans some time in the next few months) couldn't be more timely, and the hubbub about Bubba's sex obsession leading to a protectionist time where losing re-elections means time to kill. Pretty heady stuff.

Re: Spartan

I liked this film as well. Was it straight to DVD? I liked it. Good story, Kilmer kicks ass, the cast was solid. Wonderfully shot. Pacing seemed off a little (Mamet) but a good flick.

Re: Spartan

One of the better films I've seen in a while. It did go to theatres briefly, but in limited release. Kilmer just isn't a draw anymore in the broad scheme but can sure act! I really enjoyed how dry this film was. By that I mean matter of fact, like these weren't actors, they were trained agents doing their jobs.

Loved the sniper through the sight shot! Also loved that they never told us flat out who she was.

Re: Spartan

Dragging up an old post, but just seen this. I was surprised how much I liked it. Wish I would have seen it in the theater. Pretty smart and I liked the pacing. Kilmer rocked this one. Not sure why it bombed. Not the best movie ever but way better then most. :-/

Can someone please explain to me how this movie can bring in just a little over 4 million and "White Chicks" brought in 70 million. Why? Why? Why? ??? Hmmmm - Do I really want to be a filmmaker?

Re: Spartan

didn't think much of it so was surprised that it was actually a decent film.
