SPARROW DVD Cover & Label Design

Norm Sanders

I went with a white spine because I've got some heavy duty clear/frosted cases I want to utilize, and think the current design should look pretty sweet in the cases, especially with the white spine.

Also wondering for the label would people rather see a match to the cover, or one of the pics on the back, or a mixture, or what? www.myspace.com/normsanders has some other mini-posters that could also work for the label (specifically where she's walking towards us - I've got a closer photo of the same thing that would just have her waist to shoulders in the shot on the label), or there are some desktops backgrounds at www.sparrow-themovie.com that could have a cool use for label.

Thoughts? Oh, and the DVD will be available in the next few days ... just finishing up this & the menu designs.

Looks really sweet. I think V1 looks much better regarding placement of the text. This only thing that pops out at me is the "widescreen" lettering. I looks like some super-sized areal font and clashed with the other beautiful text you have going on.

You're right, it does stand out compared to the rest ... just copying what I've seen on so many other DVD's that have WIDESCREEN ... they tend to blast it right across the top, though I could change the font to the Spirit Medium that I use for the title. Otherwise, there's only two fonts on the front, which I've heard isn't a bad thing for design.

I like V2... but yeah, remove that widescreen thing altogether. I'd just extend the image or enlarge it to be the entire front... that widescreen thing is ugly

LOL. No really, tell me how you honestly feel about the WIDESCREEN thing, Brandon! :)

Thanks. Hmmm.... one vote for Version 1, and one for Version 2.

How about ideas for what you'd like to see on the label, guys?

Oh, and the photo stops at the top where you see it, so I'll have to manipulate the size & position of it to take up the whole front, OR I can push it down a bit more & put the SPARROW title directly over where the WIDESCREEN font is now .... although I kind of dig having it different going down the page vs. across like all the other DVD's out there.

Sorry, didn't mean for that to come off wrong.

Try out this pic for the front cover. I like it better.

Also, the reason I chose V2 as my favorite is because the font for the website is too small on V1.

WOW, really? That's one of my least favorite of the bunch ... though I do like how it has that drawn, comic book look (as much as I could get it to).

Version 2. Definitely. I like the website plug. But, I disagree with the others about the WIDESCREEN font/mention. I think it looks fine. And with Frosted Cases, it should look even better. Go with your gut on that one.

REVISED SPARROW dvd covers & labels

Well the majority of feedback I've rec'd so far went with the original version 2, as far as credits placement, etc. I've rec'd mixed feedback on the front pic however (version 2), so I've throw out a couple of other options, as well as labels.

Thoughts?

Thanks Brandon. Looking at them all now, I'm guessing most will probably go with that selection too ... they seem to go together the best, and the front & back of the DVD box cover look more uniform, or similar in feel/look.

I just added DVD4 label, which would likely go with Version 2 cover, if anyone was still hooked on that one.

DVD case cover 3 actually looks closer to a DVD cover than any of the others. The others stand-out as still images more-so than actual advertisements for your movie.

The chair speaks "torture movie" to me... while the still of the girl in red says
"Goths only". Though that's just what I get out of it.

The actual DVD cover should probably mirror the front cover in this case.

I think you already asked this-- but did you get any help from the great artists on the boards? Or did you run this one out yourself?

Definitely Version 3 for the cover and because of the placement, I'd go with DVD 2 for the label (although I like DVD 1, also)

Version 2 pops more than the others and the red shirt matches the font of Sparrow more. The chair one just has to go. That doesn't say anything about the movie at all. The wet rainy, frumpy look of the 3rd one looks too dreary. Her pants look terrible in that shot.
I say the 2nd one is the best and says Sparrow more than any of them.

DANGIT! I was hoping for more uniform responses, and then Aram has to go & give props to #2! LOL. I dig 2, because it's got a classy feel to it (as much as it can I guess), and goes well with the font), but a good designer I know stated it just looked like a still photo (like Kholi stated too), and differs too much from the back.

I threw the chair picture out there because I've rec'd SO many compliments on it in the poster(s).

AUGH!!! Now my wife, our old babysitter & her boyfriend just came out to the office ... ALL three of them chose Version 1 (the chair), with dvd label 2.

I HATE decisions like this. I've always felt I'm good with the bigger, broad brush stroke decisions, but when it comes to choosing what color stationary to use (white or ivory, etc.), I just about blow a gasket, LOL!

Oh, and Kholi, to answer your question ... I don't have the resources to pay one of the pros on here, so didn't bother asking ... plus I know most of them are slammed with their own projects.

That said, if someone thinks they can do a better job (won't hurt my feelings, as most probably could do better), they're welcome to PM me for pics, etc. & put something together. Just needs to be ASAP so I can get this thing out the door.

I know you've already done this, but take a gander at your DVD collection and tell me how many of those project still-photo images as their front-cover advertisement?

The third cover is not only a match to the back, but a great photo to work off of for a cover.

I definitely wouldn't go with one or two if I were trying to sell this to anyone.

Oh, and on the actual DVD print/label #1...

Try cropping it around her hood instead of her mid-section. There's a lot of water pouring down from her hood, makes for an interesting composition in contrast to the blank space that'd work well for your type face on an arc'd path.

I went with a different (closer) photo of her just to mix it up some, but really don't care for#1 (label) at all now compared to the others, especially #2 ... just something really cool about the colors that were able to come out of #2's label, not to mention kind of the ominous/mysterious look.
