southland tales small clip

I am so glad this film is getting shafted as I believe Richard Kelly is a hack. People hail this man as a genius b/c of Donnie Darko, calling that film a masterpiece whereas I walked out of that film saying "what the f*ck??", proclaiming it the biggest nonsensical pretentious hack-job I'd ever seen.

Then a funny thing happened. Three years later that same movie was playing at a party I went to, SANS SOUND. I was mesmerized. The movie seemed so damn cool when I couldn't hear it. Why was this, I thought? I remember hating this movie. So I went home and re-rented it. When I watched it a third time, I realized why I hated it so much. It was THE 80'S SOUNDTRACK! Ugh! It ruined everything for me. Well, that and the little thing about NOTHING MAKING SENSE. But whether people think it did or didn't make sense is irrelevalant. When Richard Kelly got to make his "director's cut", he put in all this explanation about what was going on, so that now things actually made sense. This proved that he actually DID want things to make sense, negating all the praise he got for originally NOT MAKING SENSE ("oh, he's a genius") and proving that he was just lucky. Southland Tales is going to be terrible. And everybody else will see this guy is just another Wachowski brother.

Donnie Darko was a great film. Totally impressive freshman effort. I look forward to his next offering (and wonder why it has been so long since he has done anything?)

The 80's soundtrack ?

The Killing Moon, Head over Heels, Notorious, Under the Milky Way, Mad World ....

Have you NO taste in music man ?

Scathing though they may be i find myself disagreeing with alot of what I've read and I haven't even seen the film.

I get the impression alot of people just "didn't get it".

Time will tell on this one....

Actually, this proves that I have *a lot* of taste in music (the 80s?? c'mon)

If it did make such incredible sense, how come there were so many complaints (both positive and negative) that it didn't, to the point where Kelly decided to create a director's cut that explained more?

How is he a hack?? This guy made a good film. The movie may not have made sense to you, but that doesn't mean that it could not be understood. Richard Kelly did something different, and that gets a thumbs-up in my book. Southland Tales has gotten pretty terrible reviews sofar, but I have learned not to trust reviews.

It just seems to me that reviewers have lost their credibility (as a whole). A lot of movies that are "critically acclaimed" I could give two sh@ts about, and those that get terrible reviews are usually A LOT BETTER than what they get credit for. With the critics, everything is hit or miss nowadays.

EX. The Da Vinci Code:
I have read the book. I have seen the movie. Book > movie. If you take the book out of the equation, the movie was good. I did have a problem with how rushed Ron Howard made the beginning, but all in all, a solid movie. What did reviewers give this movie? A big fat BORING. Rottentomatoes.com gave The Da Vinci Code a 22%. 22%!? That is a TERRIBLE score!!! This movie was in no way, shape, or form terrible. Not in the slightest. Directing, though spotty, was overall good. Actors were great. Great premise. The movie is backed by a NYT Best Seller. The movie was not perfect, but deserves well above a 22%.

If critics try to run Southland Tales into the ground, that just tells me it probably isn't NEARLY as bad as they make it out to be.

Sorry, but things just aren't that black and white (for the most part).

Richard Kelly at the least makes his movies the way he wants to, and that is way more than most Hollywood hotshots can say.

Btw, I love 80's music.

I concur

You didn't get the film but it appears a ton of people did. Perhap's we are all savant's ?

The 80's ? Dude. Open you palette a bit. I love tunes from the 40's, 50',s 60', 70's, 80's, 90,s and today ....

If you don't like the stuff from the 80's you probably haven't heard too much which means you don't have any taste in music.

What wasn't to 'get' about DD ?

I haven't seen the movie in a long time but I for one remember having a problem with the airplane/time portal element.

Wouldn't only the people on the plane have gone back in time? Why did the plane hitting the wormhole suddenly alter Donnie's life and give him the deja vu/rewinding/alternate reality effect, instead of just the passengers who actually encountered the wormhole directly?

Maybe this is clear in the movie...But I thought about it for a while and, like c.g. eads, didn't really end up "getting it".

Unlike eads, though, I did like it. If I could just figure it out...I guess I'll have to hunt down the Director's cut.
