South Park: Post Covid

Did anyone else see South Park: Post Covid yet? If not, I recommend it. I found the writing somewhat mixed, but full of interesting concepts and many jokes that landed.

it's available on Paramount+, which you can trial for $1/month and subscribe to via their website or Amazon prime

On Amazon prime:

EDIT: In case it was unclear, South Park: Post Covid is the title of their made-for-TV movie. I'm not talking about the current state of South Park in general

I quit watching that show like nine hundred years ago. Not that I didn't enjoy it. I found it funny and its satire on point. There are just some things I can only take so much of. And I had my fill of South Park after a few years. I actually saw the Christmas card they did before it was even a show, as I worked at a dubbing house and they had copies of everything...and I mean...everything. Working there made me vow to NEVER film myself having sex.

How SP became what it is today and lasted so long is a mystery to me. And I truly like everything.

I've seen those forums where it's put up against Family Guy and it's so offensive how people think SP is better.

Different style of shows, but SP is beyond annoying. (Season 1&2 were okay because it was original and fresh.)

And I know FG lost its way too but only after like 12 years, ha...and it's still watchable.

it probably helps that I haven't seen the show in a long time. ergo fresh eyes.

but the thing about SP is that it responds to politics and pop culture, which gives it a renewable relevance and a renewable source of material. this "made for TV movie" as they call it (it's an hour long) deals with the pandemic (which lasts 40+ years in the movie, hence the characters are now in their 40s), comedy in the age of wokeness (which basically becomes compliments with no punchlines followed by polite applause), wealth inequality (across the street from a canine optometrist, a guy shoots someone in the head and then casually steals his bag of groceries without fear of law enforcement, which is non-existent), and the playground is full of children standing still and wearing VR headsets.

The movie is replete with Blade Runner references. For example, the protagonist is accompanied by a woman who turns out to be a hologram who turns out to be Amazon's Alexa. She periodically interrupts their expletive-filled conversations to offer purchasing recommendations.

I appreciated its heterodox ideology. It mocked the excesses of both covid safetyism and vaccine hesitancy.

I've seen the brilliant pre-show Christmas card as well. The internet also has copies of everything :)

Eh. Different strokes for different folks. I found FG pretty obnoxious after it returned from cancellation, which was only season 4.

SP is full of social and political commentary. FG is more like a closed-loop of media references. And generally I think it's kind of unabashedly mean-spirited. A lot of the jokes might be clever theoretically but very dull in practice. Like how long can we continue a scene of a baby beating up a dog and getting increasingly violent and bloody. Or how long can we continue a scene of Peter running from a giant chicken. Not my style of absurdism, even though some of the jokes land well (particularly early in its run). I haven't seen anything recent from it, however.

ha, you're crazy...seasons 1-6 for FG are iconic.

And those examples above are once in a while throughout the seasons, not reoccurring (although I'm not crazy about them either or the extend Broadway-like singing).

But SP gets pretty obnoxious after like 5 minutes in any episode.

Sounds like you just don't like SP. I really didn't like it at first because of the bourgeois sensibilities I grew up with. I only appreciated it when I saw it again in adulthood with less of a stick up my arse
