South Beach Diet

Hey, I'm going to try it. I need to get back in shape and eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches aren't working out too great. anyone else on it/try it?

I like peanut butter and jelly, natural peanut butter though, crunch, but I am not a huge fan of having to refridgerate it, then it becomes hard to spread....what are we talking about?

THANKS. i have a weight set, and i do lift, but i dont eat right. YOU GET TO THE GYM SO YOU CAN WORK OUT AND GET READY FOR AN ASS WHUPPIN

:D ....just kidding

I've been going to the gym... the South Beach Diet promotes full health. That means learning to eat properly and exercising. It is not a "get-thin-quick" diet, but rather a lifestyle diet.

The first two weeks you go on a radical diet that cuts out all sugar and starch (no sugar, fruit, potatoes, bread, corn, carrots, etc) Mostly lean meats (beef, chicken breast, etc) and green vegetables. This is in an effort to get the bodies insulin levels back where they are supposed to be, to restore a healthy balance in the body. During these two weeks people lose between 8 - 15 pounds on average.

After that you re-introduce the items you removed (potatoes, bread, rice, etc), but you do it in small amounts and in a smarter manner. During this, phase 2, you should lose 2-3 pounds a week, on average.

Then phase three is when you reach your target size/weight, and you eat whatever you want, but hopefully you have learned to eat smarter. Essentially you should eat until you are full, and no more. If you get hungry again, eat just until you are full. The diet teaches the right kind/amounts of snacks to eat, etc, etc.

It's all about eating smart and exercising. There is no such thing as a "get-thin-quick" diet.

Ok, off my soapbox now. I have been going to the gym and walking throughout these first couple weeks, that is why I am having success.

Also, weights don't really help you lose weight. You just turn fat into muscle. If you want to drop some pounds, running, biking, or aerobic exercise will help you cut the fact.

Well, I would say it is both weight training and aerobic. The aerobic helps you burn more calories, and combined with less intake of calories causes weight loss. However, lean muscle (which you build with proper weight training) burns fat for the fuel to restore itself after a workout. This causes the fat to be burned out of the system.

A couple years ago I went to a gym for 6 months and after quitting the gym I continued to lose weight (even though I wasn't doing any aerobic or watching what I ate) for another month or so.

But I agree, you need the aerobic also...running, walking, biking, etc. But overall it is a mindset thing, we are so used to wanting things "right now" and without any cost to ourself. To lose weight/get in shape requires changing how we think about eating and getting off the couch and doing something. The key to the aerobic is to get the heart rate increased for at least 30 minutes daily.

If you want to be healthy you have to adopt a healthy lifestyle. All these fads are just that, but noone seems to sell eating balanced meals, drinking plenty of water, and getting regular exersize. If you make it your life to be healthy, you will be.

I just haven't made it my life yet. YEAH FOOD!!!!!!!!!! and yeah tv too, I guess.

That's what I was trying, apparently unsuccessfully, to explain about "South Beach". Yes, there is some gimmick to it to make it marketable. But the truth of the diet is that it is not a "diet", rather it is a lifestyle. It teaches you how to eat a more balanced diet and how to make that work in real life. For example, going out to eat is always a challenge when you are on the latest fad diet, but with South Beach they take the time to explain how to properly choose and eat food at a restaurant - it is that important. And they also emphasize exercise to round out the healthy lifestyle necessary for proper health.

I'm afraid I am starting to sound like a South Beach spokesman :embarasse , but I am not. I am just really that impressed with the quality of the product, and I have the initial results to show that it can work.

Good for you Zach. I practice the Zone diet more or less, which is:

40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fat

I admittedly am very half-ass about it but try and stay on for a few days before falling off; and always jump back on the next day (I like my Corona and Mexican Food way to much to make it 7 days a week). But the key.....................................

Working out. These people that do not work out are an enigma to me. It's not about trying to look like this:

That is overkill

But more like:

I recently started playing Tennis again after a 7 year lay-off from the sport and have been a huge bball junkie for the last 15 years (The back is starting to go Larry Bird/Charles Barkley style and my right knee Anterior is not liking bball anymore)

I don't like the radical Carb-Reducing induction that diets like South Beach and/or Atkins promote and find this 'quick fix' unnecasary in the long run. It's good if you want to drop some quick weight. But the keys are really a solid diet i nthe vien of The Zone or South Beach, a certain amount of Calories a day and working out. I can't go more than a few days with not going to the gym; I'll go crazy. It's such a great 'stress release' and after picking up Tennis again (playing 2 times a week right now) I'm seeing some nice results as of late; qand topping off my gym workouts with a the heavy bag is just crazy/sweat pouring/fat blastingness.

I totally support balacing a cardio/strength conditoining workout routine but those who have lean muscle actually burn calories in thier sleep. The balance is the key. And I htink JOE summed it up best. No fad is needed. Eat right, Eat the right amount and work out.

The body will also send out hunger signals when it's thirsty. Even before your mouth is dry. So try drinking a glass of water first. If that doesn't satisfy the crave then move on to food.

That's what I liked about the "Body For Life" program...it is a similar, eat smart and exercise a lot lifestyle program. In that program you follow the "diet" 6 days and then on the 7th day you as much as you want of whatever you want. The idea being that one day is not going to kill you, it helps you overcome cravings the rest of the week knowing that you can have it on the 7th day, and it helps you remember how bad you feel when you overeat or eat stuff that weighs on you the rest of the day.

But I agree, the balanced approach is the most beneficial and, potentially, the most successful. If the diet/exercise program is too radical, people won't be inclined to follow it long enough. You are right, the idea is not to become Mr. Universe...if it was, we would be following strict programs and not need these "fad" diets; rather, the idea is to be healthy.

HansK, I have heard that before too, but forgot about it...thanks for posting. It is definitely the truth. I find that when I keep water on hand during the day I eat much less. When I start feeling hungry I drink a glass or two of water...then even if I still feel hungry I don't eat as much before I get full.

Peace,
Larry

Exactly Larry

All in Moderation (Damn the cliches are true). But damn people; work-out. My brother and his wife

The south Beach diet seems like a fad to me. If I was you I'd just run everyday cuz when you run you don't even think about food. Its also an effective way to quit smoking.

Good luck anyways.
