Hello. Can somone offer some opinions for getting a decent soundtrack for my little "film-noir" mystery project I'm working on. Should I hire someone (how much would that be), is there any good public domain music, or should I invest in a music generation software and learn it inside and out??? I'd like the music to fit the mystery film-noir genre. Any ideas??? Thanks

Something moody to fit a film-noir mystery. nothing real specific. Something along the lines of the opening score to Chinatown. I won't start shooting till early 2008 so its a ways off....(o and i just noticed i posted in the completely wrong forum :(

maybe a muted trumpet with a couple of soft sax's and an acoustic bass?

I with throw a couple things together this weekend to see if thats what you are going for. I usually just do it for the music credit line :D

You have a few options, and time, which is good

1. Purchase music. This would be costly.

2. IF YOUR PROJECT IS NOT-FOR-PROFIT ONLY, there are sites where music has been created that you may use, providing you give proper credit. In some cases, the people have been known to make custom track for people who inquire.

3. Post on craigslist/mandy looking for someone to score a film on a low/no budget.

4. Post on craigslist/mandy looking for someone to score a film on a budget. In this and the last case, you will most likely get what you pay for. Although I've gotten some decent soundtracks for free

4. Make your own! If you have some time to donate to trying, this will be the most beneficial in the longrun. If you learn to make your own music, it can only help your projects. And if you get any good, you make music and charge clients for a "Custom Score"

Unless you've got lots of time to learn something like Sony AcidPro, you might also consider buying royalty-free music. For a mystery with suspense, perhaps you might want to consider some dramatic music like this:

Or their Cinematic Orchestra tracks:

For $100 per "albumn", you can't beat the price and Royalty Free Music sure beats the cheesy elevator music some other companies try to peddle! However, I have found one other excellent drama film score at Sound-Ideas for $130:

If anyone else has tips on high-quality dramatic/cinema music, please let us know...

Good luck, Michael

I agree, post a request on Mandy.com i did this a couple of years ago for my first documentary and was blown away by the response. I had an amazing composer in the USA score it.
