Soundtrack Submissions...

I have a project I am going to be starting soon and I am going to be looking for material from various artist and producers for the soundtrack.

Now when I put the word out, Do I have to pay them (the artist/group/producer) to use their music even if they submitted it on their own? I am not talking about people who are in the mainstream right now. This is mainly for people that have talent and want some exposure in terms of their music.

When I go to sell this product, do they get a cut of my profits for using their music on the soundtrack?

Should I have to pay for the rights to use the song on my DVD?

All deals are negotiable. You must have written releases and copyright permissions as appropriate, but whether any money changes hands (besides the token $1 usually suggested by attorneys) is strictly a matter for negotiation. IMHO, you should avoid percentages for anyone, since it really complicates your life in so many ways. If you want to pay in the future, you could offer a flat amount based on some milestone (eg. acceptance at a film festival over x in size, printing of the second thousand DVDs, etc.)

ok cool I will look into that. I just figured I would give artists on the "underground" a chance to promote their music in my next project.
