soundtrack quality field recording brazil job

shooting a feature length project on Brazilian music

we are looking for a recordist who is prepared/excited about the challenge, until then:

i (director, DP) am interested in learning for myself about the systems/approaches anyone out there may have employed.

this is exciting stuff; a mix between ethnomusicology, a doc. that will look a whole lot like a narrative, and a grand meeting with wonderful performers...

Re: soundtrack quality field recording brazil job

why not get a GOOD wireless system with different options for the mic/transmitter and do it yourself?

the route i went was to get the sennheiser evo-100 system.

i got the combo where you get

(1) receiver
(1) lavalier/transmitter
(1) "plug on connector"

the plug on connector is often mis-understood.

basically it is originally meant to plug onto the bottom of a handheld microphone.

but it works equally as well on anything that has an xlr connector.

i have used mine with a standard lavalier when i was too far away from the subject to run a wire.

i have also used it when the subject was moving around and a wire would have been impracticle if not impossible.

basically you could take the lavalier (either the one that comes with it or another that accepts xlr) and put on a person or even an instrument and this would free you to get farther away or even to circle around the performers while getting different angles yet the sound would be a constant.

this also allows you to still use the second xlr channel on the dvx-100 to either mount a shotgun mic or another wired or even wireless mic.

the most common question next is can i connect up two wireless mics?

yes and no, the system i mention is a single transmit/receive, the combo does in fact give you two different transmitters and just ONE receiver.

to put it simply it would be like having two cordless phones in your house and you could use them both but you would have to plug them into two different phone lines.

but for basic documentary work i don't ever imagine i would want to work with a recordist once i have done the above with very good quality coming out of it, and more importantly, being a control freak i knew what quality i was getting without hoping and praying that somebody else got the sound.

Re: soundtrack quality field recording brazil job

start with good ms or xy stereo rig
+ good shot gun and few wierless of course something better then dvx to run in to
its about 25k packeg for job you intend to do , look for good soundman with gear - thats not something you can learn in 2 weeks

Re: soundtrack quality field recording brazil job

thanks for the replies:

the wireless issue, for me, so far, is that it comes off sounding quite thin, and the frequency response for the wireless kit i have is far too narrow to do music justice

i also WANT, and respect what a real sound recordist with a complete kit could do for us, this is an almost 0 talking head type doc.

taubkin,
we are going to shoot in as many of Brasil's 30 regions as possible, but our connections, teachers, and past collaborators are concentrated around Rio, Salvador, Ceara, B. Horizonte, and Sao Paulo. I have read quite a few of your posts here, i would love to connect:

If you think a sound recordist is useful in a Narrative film, you should see what they do on docs. First of all: no ADR, second, no sound libraries, third, crazy other things to consider in the heat of the set. There is just a difference between docs that take sound seriously and the ones who don't that is incredible. And for a music doc not have someone in charge of sound, well that's propostruous...

Re: soundtrack quality field recording brazil job

BTW, Oleg, how's the last doc you worked for (Amos Gidai's) coming? When we are going to be able to see/hear it?

São Paulo's Intl Doc Festival (wich I work for) is coming It'd be great if it came here... I'd catch a screening, heck maybe I could buy you a beer...
;)

Cheers!

Re: soundtrack quality field recording brazil job

hahahaha!

Didn't you work on a Documentary on the DVX, earlier this year? Wasn't it his?

...is it that bad? ouch.

You can't imagine how much you'd want to come here. Salvador, Rio de Janeiro and Ceará (that is a state, he probably meant Fortaleza) are beautiful cities. As for São Paulo and Belo Horizinte, well, cool places, but not actually worth the ticket ;).

Re: soundtrack quality field recording brazil job

Re: soundtrack quality field recording brazil job

Now this is cool.  You're going to be recording some of the most beautiful music on the planet - you can't half-ass this.  Get a real recordist/engineer, give him the tools he needs to do his job and stay out of his way.  You'll be happy you did.

Matt

EDIT: Much of this music is improvisational (within its form) and real magic can occur when you wont have a "second take". Honestly, if you feel that you are having trouble getting what you need post here. I can't underwrite it for you, but I would be happy to help try and secure funding from various sources/schools. Ethnomusicology is as much a responsibility as it is a privilege.

Re: soundtrack quality field recording brazil job

Hey Matt, yes I want a solid recordist, the search continues. Contact me at marloshui@hotmail.com please

i can send you our info., then we can talk about it. Happy to hear that you appreciate this music. Investors so far have replied with something along the lines of "OOh, Brasil, I LOVE SALSA!" So, on one hand, people will discover something new, on the other, no amount of name dropping seems to sink in.

cheers
Michael
