Soundtrack Pro workflow question

i edited a scene in final cut, sent the audio to soundtrack, exported the audio from soundtrack back into FCP and gave my client the product. they liked it, but needed some minor tweaks in the actual video edit where a few additional cuts were added and a few taken out.

do i have to rework the entire audio? i can't really copy and paste because things will be out of sync. what's the best way to handle this situation?

Soundtrack Pro has a conform process that will handle this situation fairly smoothly. Just go to the Help menu in Final Cut Pro, search for conform, and read the directions.

Make sure you listen to the final output carefully, and watch out for pops. The conform process tends to raise the track volume up to 0 dB after each clip, which can sometimes cause problems.

damn....that's only in STP 2....okay that's it, i'm through procrastinating, time to upgrade TODAY.

Upgrading won't actually help you on this project. The conform only works if you follow a pretty strict workflow and part of that is your STP project must be created by a send to STP from FCP. Your only real option now would be to OMF the audio to ProTools and or Nuendo and use Conformalizer with before and after XML's from FCP. Realistically your better off handing it to a sound person who has those apps and have them conform it. Another option would be to take the individual tracks in STP (I thought the old version was only stereo??) and bounce them and bring them into FCP. Then cut picture and sound together and fix the cuts inside FCP.

that sucks, i went ahead and ordered the new FTP studio anyway since i just collected on another gig. i'll have to upgrade eventually anyway.

how strict is the workflow you speak of to do the conform? the only tutorials i've checked out say it's a 2 or 3 step process.

You send to STP and make sure to save your FCP project afterward so every body has the same secret handshake. Then when you change things in that FCP project you can send again to STP and go into the conform mode. If your on the same machine you may be able to conform directly from the FCP project but I don't think so. The conform is actually pretty straight forward and works really well. BUT it will work with those two projects only, so if you have more than one STP project for the same film it will only work on one of them. So for instance a music only project that didn't start with a send to STP is not conformable. BUT you could bring those music tracks into the STP project that is linked and they should conform. The other little catch with this work mode, is that in a send to FCP is sending the video and any added audio and just playing the audio portion of the video file. So this would not work too well on say a RED project. If both are on the same machine I believe you can "send to" with referenced clips so your not having to copy all the media. As far as I know there is no "send back" function so you will spit out the sound track and bring it back into the FCP project to marry it to the video. In some ways the conform works a lot better than traditional TC & EDL based conform tools. But it doesn't work so well in a team environment and it doesn't work at all on projects started elsewhere.
