Soundtrack Pro workflow issues?

Hey all,

I am working on a sound design right now on Soundtrack Pro. I typically use ProTools so this is kinda new.

So far I've been liking the workflow from FCP to Soundtrack - then I started having issues with the overall editing. It seems that when I am working on a specific clip. EQing it and such - the change affects the entire timeline. Since this is a mmultitrack project brought in from FCP. The master clip was brought on in one sweep. So basically I have Master clip 1, and then a bunch of subclips from there. (Scene 1, Take 1). So if I want to adjust S1T1, it seems to process the entire masterclip. So far I can't really tell if it changes the entire clip - but it certainly process using the entire clip. Which really slows workflow.

Any ideas of what to do here? Am I doing something wrong? Or is this how it works?

PS. I also can't figure out how to close an audio file once I double click it. It never seems to disappear tab wise.

STP is a little "quirky". For one thing if you "sent to STP" from FCP you got the whole edit (as video files) and STP is working on the audio stream in the video file. Can make for some REALLY large audio sessions unless the FCP and STP projects are on the same machine and sharing media. Also by default your clips are not "independent" audio clips. So if you do something to a clip with out first making that clip "independent" STP will modify (undoable) the portion of the master clip that your sub clip comes from. This can bite you big time if your using overlapping bits of sound files. To demo this take a file in the time line. Grab a hunk in the middle and put it on another track. Now if you mute that new sub clip it will mute the section of the original file that it came from. It's not hard to make clips independent but it's easy to forget coming from Pro Tools where all clips are independent.

In your case making the sub clips independent would probably speed things up. Depending on the video format (remember STP is working on the sound portion of the video file not an audio file) it could take awhile for STP to process.

Thanks for the quick response. How exactly would I go making these clips independent now? Or if not now - for future reference. I've read the manuals for both FCP and Soundtrack and honestly the manuals seem to be better used as a paperweight.

I have the original FCP file. Which is what I sent over.

I am quickly learning this program as the design is due friday. Long story. Got the edit extreamly late. I was supposed to have a month for the design. Protools station went down and is otherwise unavailable. So, STP it is. And I just now learned how to automate the mix panel. Haha. One step at a time eh?
