Soundtrack Pro problem

When I try to sent a clip from FCP to Soundtrack Pro to work on it as an audio project, I can only send one track (i.e. only a1 or a2) even when I have them linked as a stereo pair. And when I send as a multiclip, it sends both tracks separately, even when linked as a stereo pair. I've watched Larry Jordan's tutorial on Lynda.com and as far as I can tell, I'm doing exactly what he's doing, but not getting the same result. I've looked at all the preferences I can find to see if I've missed something, but nothing appears to be amiss. Anyone suggest anything else?

Thanks.

Are you linking two audio tracks that were not originally imported together as a stereo pair? STP is looking at the Master clip, the original capture file, not the copy of it on your Timeline.

If you want to send a whole Sequence worth of audio tracks for mixing, you'd a "Send To" STP of the Sequence itself as an STP Multitrack Project, not individual audio clips. Individual audio clips have to be sent as audio files.

I'm guessing that these are two audio tracks captured seperately, eh?

That's helpful. I have some audio clips edited together for a documentary interview, that has ambient noise, and I sent the sequence from FCP to STP. But when I try to send the sequence (double click a clip in STP) for noise reduction, the whole original audio file (unedited) is also sent to the new tab. How can I just send the edited sequence alone for noise clean up?

Again, STP references the original capture file originally, and gives you the option of doing non-distructive editing. I wish it'd import only between in and out points, but, there you have it. Write Apple and ask for this feature.

When you double click a clip in the STP Multitrack timeline, it opens that clip (original capture file) into it's own Audio File project. Notice that it has what are supposed to be in and out points indicating the section in your Multitrack project. Although the whole file is opened. What I do is set my noise print, then select only the section between the in and out points, and apply the noise reduction to that.

Here's a workflow I've recently developed. If I have an interview, let's say, and I use different parts of it as clips in various places in my Sequence. I'll take the ORIGINAL capture file to STP to do noise reduction BEFORE I start to edit that take. In other words, I clean up the sound in my capture files before I ever think about droping them into a Sequence. Just an idea.

But having STP only reference the section of the original capture that is in your FCP Seqeuence would be a nice improvement to STP. Enough people ask for it, we'll probably get it. Go to the FCP Feedback page that's liked in FCP in the FCP menu. Let Apple know what you want to see inhanced in STP.

Thanks again Ben. I'll write FCP about the suggestion. Unfortunately, all the importing for this project is done, and I'll have to work in the noise reduction earlier next time, knowing the limitations.

You can still do your noise reduction on your captured master clips, it'll automatically update, it'll be fine. No need to do it before import. I do it after Import, before editing. If you've already edited, you can open the original master clips into STP from the Capture Scratch folder. Clean up the original clips (make back up copies to be safe), then when you next open your FCP project, all that audio will update to the cleaned up version.
