Soundtrack Pro 2 - 5.1 audio mixing.

I'm soon approaching the point where I'll begin my audio scrub for my indie film and am interested in trying out the 5.1 audio panning capabilities in Soundtrack Pro 2.

Having looked into it a bit I understand that I can't do real-time audio panning in 5.1 using the optical audio port on my mac. To solve this I purchased a USB device which indicates that it will output 6 channels of audio to my receiver for 6 channel direct input.

Unfortunately after I opened the packaging for this device I learned that it only will do the six channels on XP, not on a Mac. The device I purchased for reference is located here: http://usbcenter.com/

Can anyone please point me to the next cheapest device which will actually let me mix 5.1 audio in real-time on my Mac Pro (dual G5) system? I'm hoping it won't cost a ton, but at this point I just want to make certain that what I purchase next will actually work and meet my needs.

Thanks,
~Jonathan

Yes, it can take 6 separate RCA audio inputs. For the device I purchased I got 3 cables that had 1/8" stero jack at one end and split out to two RCA jacks.
If I can still use those cables with a new device, so much the better, but if I need to get a set of RCA to RCA cables, oh well.

My guess then is that you'd be better off buying an audio interface with at least 6 analog outs than trying to find a surround encoder. Better for monitoring anyway.... try and find an interface with RCA outs or switchable +10/-4 outs! Gott run now, but let me know if this is unclear...

What I had purchased (if you check the link) was supposed to be purely an audio output device and not a surround encoder. It happened to use 3 1/8" mini stereo jacks instead of 6 RCA outs probably for space, but I liked the fact it used USB since that's nice and generic.
My question is if someone else who is doing 6 channel surround mixing, what are they using as a device to do the direct audio output?

umm... an audio interfave with at least 6 outputs... these are available from the likes of Presonus, MOTU, M-Audio, Digidesign, Focusrite... I'm sure to be forgetting a few.
