Soundtrack Help

Hello. Can somone offer some opinions for getting a decent soundtrack for my little "film-noir" mystery feature I'm working on. Should I hire someone (how much would that be), is there any good public domain music, or should I invest in a music generation software and learn it inside and out??? I'd like the music to fit the mystery film-noir genre. Any ideas??? i don't start till eary 08. Thanks

maybe a muted trumpet with a couple of soft sax's and an acoustic bass?

I with throw a couple things together this weekend to see if thats what you are going for. I usually just do it for the music credit line

I love the old film noir stuff, would be a really fun project to work on if you could give me some more details.
