has anyone used Soundtrack or Garageband for Macs? I am looking for a good program to record sound for my band/ and for my movies. If these two would be no good for that, which would you suggest? Thanks Tim.
Try Logic. That's what most pros I know use. Garage band is actually pretty neat too. The same job can be done on that. Course, Logic has alot more to offer.
Logic is going to set you back a grand but you're going to get an awful lot with it. I prefer Nuendo for a variety of reasons, but that debate makes the DVX/XL2 debate look like a tea party.... Bottom line is, they both do what you need. You could pick up a copy of Cubase SX (a slimmed down version of Nuendo - comparable to Logic) for $600 and then buy some of your own plugs (a method I prefer). On Mac you should also look at Digital Performer. All of these programs combine a midi sequencer, a multitrack recorder and a mixing/post facility.
As far as "pros" go, you hear a lot of that about this program or that and much of it's rubbish although there are definite preferences. Film scorers tend to use Digital Performer by far. Some are using Logic (Danny Elfman) or Cubase (Hans Zimmer) but most use DP. Logic is big in the states, Cubase is big in Europe. Nuendo is a giving protools a pretty good run for it's money capability wise, but hasn't really put a dent in the professional scene although that may slowly be changing.
While you can record into Garage Band, you can only record one track at a time (I'm pretty sure) it does not have multi-track capabilities or post-production capabilities. For anything other than very basic composition its a waste of time. Kind of like comparing imovie to FCP HD.
yes, garage band is nice but has its limits. I'm a Cubase SX user and thats pretty my main app for film score. I'm waiting to save up so I can get the veinna orchrestra cube collection. Yeah , $4,000 price tag but it's dam worth it.
May I call you Blue? Have you listened to the East West Quantum Leap Orchestra? I mean really listen to it, not what internet classical composers say about it? I am truly and utterly astounded by it. The ability to mix the three mic positions is not only revolutionary it is OMG amazing. It really is incredible. There are really only two downsides to it as compared to VSO. The first is that almost everyone who hears it says it has that "Hollywood Sound" - and it does. But that's what makes it great for the vast majority of scores, IMO. Second is, it doesn't have quite as many articulations, but most of the articulations that you are giving up are the more esoteric ones (most film scores don't call for using the back of the bow for instance). Plus they've been adding legato tools and an expanded library. Anyway, before you spend $4K on an orchestra in a box, I think you owe it to yourself to try this one out. It's half the price and either one is going to require a hardware investment.
I love SX, it gets a bad rap that it really doesn't deserve - it is one hell of a program and now that it has the Nuendo sound engine it really sounds good.
Matt, first of all you can call whatever. Blue, blueballs , spider, or asshole, I'll respond regaurdless. Anyways, yeah someone already mentioned to me about eastwest quantium, and how great it sounds and I'm sure it sounds really good. What i didn't mention above is that I'm getting the ORch cube for $1000. A producer I met is going to sell me his originals. He already has all his sounds backedup and plus he's slowly shaying away from music and focusing more on his family. So he's going to hook me up. I want his makie D8 but he anit selling that. I don't give a **** what people say about cubase. It does everything I want it to do. What more can I ask for. Matt, you do film scores? If you do, I would love to hear some samples.
NICE!!! Great deal! I just wrote an intro for a series of training videos, I don't really score so much anymore. If you saw my short, I wrote the music for that.
I have SOUNDTRACK and I purchased the 2 disc sets of DRUMS ON DEMAND which if you like REAL sounding drums and cymbals, and want them to sound "Live" then you should give them a try.
I have used SOUNDTRACK to produce a few Rock songs and several Hip Hop tracks.
There are alot of LOOP CD's out that you can enhance what comes with ST and GB.
I will be posting some of my music on the ST website as soon as I get my copyright info back. Also on that site you can listen to songs that other people have made. Some sound really good and then there are some that are no so good.
I'm a Logic7/Pro Tools guy myself. i've also been considering the Vienna library. I want a real orchestra dang it! I'll check out the Quantum library.. thanks for the linkage!
