sounds recommendations

Hey guys,

I am working on a budget for a film right now and I have a few questions? I am enquiring about the appropriate sound tools for the project. I am planning to produce music from audio samples of the atmosphere of the footsteps, breath and others. What type of mic's would you recommend for this. I would like to use a boom but also I am thinking of fitting the actor's with wireless mic's to catch breath and footsteps. I am new to audio so I really have no idea the capability of the mics on the market. If you think I can pull it off with one instrument it would be best but I want the honest truth of what it will take to pull it off well even if the price hurts.

Thanks

Your best bet is to hire someone that knows sound, has all the equipment and can do a good job at a lower price point than you buying the equipment and operating it in a novice fashion.

Both the footsteps and breathing would probably be better off recorded in post-production (foley for the footsteps and ADR/voiceover for the breathing). This is especially true if your planning on using either element as part of a musical composition.

If your looking for one mic that can record both subtle vocal elements and foley, I'd reccomend the Sennheiser MKH416.

Ptalsky's right, though: a skilled opperator is money well spent on any budget.

Yep, if you can afford a really great foley artist, then do it in post. On all projects I'm on I always try to grab the ambient sounds (footsteps, doors, keys, etc etc) on set. Great foley artists are VERY expensive.

Thanx for the good advice guys. I will defenitely have a professional on the set. I am building the budget right now so that is the reason for my question. It is a relief to know that most sound guys come with batteries included (with sound equipment).

While I believe you were making a joke, in your budget remember that batteries are not included - on my last shoot I went through about 100 AA batteries in three days. Be sure to ask your mixer what they charge for expendibles.
