sound setup on low budget.

hi,

i am buying a boom pole, stabilizer (for mic), and an AT mic. ive got 50' of XLR cable and a set of headphones(wired) to plug in at the DVX.

how do you guys monitor sound in any kind of distance situations? is it possible or even recommended to have the boom operator hooked up with a set of wireless headphones or something since he's the guy in control?

i dont think they make too many 20' long headphone wires (do they?) and i dont think i want that many wires all over the place anyhow...

thanks!

Re: sound setup on low budget.

It's extremely useful for the boom operator to hear what they're doing. Vital, actually.

You could use wires if you want, you can get a 1/8" mini-jack extension cable at Radio Shack for not much money, I think they have 'em in 16' lengths. It's not really any extra wires, it could piggyback on the mic cable. But if you want to go wireless, heck, anything that lets the boom op hear what he/she's doing is going to be better than nothing, definitely.

Re: sound setup on low budget.

I got my headphone extension cable at Radio Shack. It's 20', which is a pretty handy length. I find my most used XLR cable is 25'. Two other small items that are handy--Goody pony-tail balls for securing the cable to the boom, and a carabiner through one of your belt loops for looping cable. I spent about 35 hours sound mixing and booming on an indie production this past weekend--a good supply of tylenol also helps. Cables and wires all over the set are a fact of life--fortunately the headphone cable is very light, so it's easy to work with.

carabiner, never thought of using those.  good idea!

you guys are right, i cant see needing more than 20' of headphone cable...

since we're on the subject what are some good headphones.  i hear the sony MDRV6's (or is it the 600's) are good.

any recommedations?

Re: sound setup on low budget.

I don't know what the difference is, I just know everyone uses 7506's. And, I can say that I've never had a problem with headphone volume from the DVX when using the 7506's...
