Sound Record?

Better option for you is the Tascam HD-P2, which has most of the features in the Marantz recorders and more, including TC, more options for recording, including 24-bit, etc. (My previous recorder is a Marantz PMD670, but switched to the Tascam this year).

Another option may be (if you can wait for it) a new mini recoder recently leaked by Zaxcom (they're officially "announcing" it at NAB, but Glenn leaked it on RAMPS a few days ago...sounds interesting, especially since it does TC and is small, it may create a new option (again) for standalone boom (and glenn was quick to note that it also can take a lavaliere, so it may be another "wireless" option, since you can synch to the TC, but no monitoring/adjusting control...)

(revised to correct the model number...oops...I hate it when daylight savings kicks in...)

I have been following that thread over at RAMPS too. I have to agree with a lot of their assessments. At first it sounds like a great deal but until they release a complete price for the stereo TC unit, I am thinking the HD-P2 is a much better bird in the hand. Unless Glenn takes peoples criticisms to heart, I bet a stereo TC recorder will be in the $2000 range. Hopefully we shall see some solid numbers at NAB.

Best bang for medium buck=HD-P2 IMHO.

The other problem is that Zaxcom of late has been making lots of announcements that haven't released (i.e. their new Tx with record and TC is still not generally available...)

So, I'm not holding my breath. My guess is that by the time they release it (GA) I'll have my Cantar and be a happy camper.

But back to the original thread, yes, for now go with the HD-P2 and you will be very happy. (Jay Rose has hinted that a fairly favorable review is forthcoming in DV magazine.)

if you dont need tc and you have external mixer , look for the r-9 from edirol or MT from MAUDIO

if you do need tc and, you dont have mixer and need phantom power - the tascam, fostex , marantz are the way to go

i still think that the zaxcom might come as 2 track as a main unit since noone will buy the mono - so like it was win the past they just put it in whithout aditional cost . 2-3 weeks and we will know for sure.

hey man, i think based on how much you seem to know, olegs suggestions are pretty much in the right cash range for you: maudio microtrak and stuff.

naturally, there are better systems around, but you gotta pay for the good stuff, and more than that, you need to understand how they work and why they are better in order to reap the rewards...

sorry, but thats just how it is.. one more thing, i remember ty ford once said something i thought was quite useful advice:

before asking about brand names, do a little research on how to spell and pronounce the names, and naturally what kind of stuff the company deals in. here, its a learning environment, so who cares, its no big deal. but out in a professional capacity you can really make people think you're incompetent when you arent. not trying to be rude or anything, i just thought that was good advice when i heard it.

good portable digital recorder

good portable digital recorder

I have been using the Archos 402 and SP-PREAMP-4 combo
http://tinyurl.com/d54h6
with a Reactive Sounds Auris stereo mic
http://tinyurl.com/sxkxs
for field recording with good results...
the 402, preamp and mic cost me ~ $570 USD
*note: I got my 402 for $250 with rebate due to a special Archos was having – this saved me money compared to buying the Archos/Preamp combo from Sound Professionals
