sound questions

I'm finishing up the editing on a short film that I made and I noticed that the sound, although not horrible, does have some white noise in it. I was wondering what would be a good sound software to clean this up? My editing program is sony vegas...if that helps.

Also, I think the white noise is attributed to the cords that I am using...they are somewhat old and are probably on they're way out, so I am looking at buying some new ones for future projects. What are good xlr cable brands? I'm not looking to spend a fortune...say around $150. I would need two cables around 20' each.

There are a number of potential sources for hiss or buzz. Working backwards, check that you're monitoring speakers aren't introducing hiss on playback. Cables, mics and preamps can all be sources of noise. While I'm all for well-maintained high-quality mic cables, it wouldn't surprise me to hear that the hiss is originating somewhere else in your signal chain.

If the noise is fairly narrow-band, you may be able to take the edge off with an EQ. For broadband noise that's regular and consistant, Soundsoap and DNR can help, but don't expect any miracles.

As for new cable reccomendations: Canare Starquad cable, Neutrik connectors. If you're handy with a solderring iron you can make them yourself and save a fair bit of money. Just be sure you wire the pins propperly.
