Sound- Making something sound like it's in another room?

I'm trying to make some sound effects and dialog sound like they're coming from another room, and behind a closed door or wall. I've tried applying various audio filters in FCP but can't seem to find one that works. Do I edit this in FCP, AE, or Soundtrack Pro? Thanks.

most will be achieved in the EQ. use the 3 band filter and start by dropping all the high end out. play with the sliders and you'll get there. some reverb might help too.

I've mixed at some top houses in L.A. (including Todd-AO - with Buzz Knudson) and they will often feed the track out a speaker and then re-mike it from the required perspective (in anouther room, behind a door, etc.)

low pass filter in FCP. adjust the slider until it is sounding right. Also, if you want a phone sound effect, do the same with the high pass filter.
