Sound Kit Opinion

Hello folks,

I just got myself a sound kit and was wondering if that was a right decision or not.

Well, I was going to get the Senheizer MKH-416, but that was almost £1000 everything. So, the guy advised me to buy a kit that included the following:

1 Boom Pole
2 Wind Shields
1 Senheizer K6 powering module
1 Senheizer ME 62
1 Senheizer ME 66
1 Camcorder Shoe Mount
1 Pistol (or whatever you call it)
1 short XLR-XLR cable

The whole lot came to around £1000 (around $1600).

Was this a good choice?

Now, I have got some questions regarding the K6 module and the XLR cables:

What exactly is the ROLL-OFF FILTER for? And what's the best setting?

Now, when I went to buy a long XLR-XLR cable, the guy was asking me if I wanted balanced or unbalanced. I wasn't sure what to buy, so I got one of each. Now, I know that the unbalanced is for mono signal and balanced for stereo. I think that I should have bought the balanced one, since I use it on channel 2 and then I set the switches so that I can get a stereo signal.
Was this correct?

Thanks in advance

Fidel.

PS: I am thinking of buying a sound mixer as well. Which one should I buy?

Re: Sound Kit Opinion

the roll off decrise the lo friqwency -about 150 hz /6db per octav if i remember correct , you dont usse it if you dont have to , this is to much for normal work with windshild
usially you do it not to overload the mike or mixer input stage with low fq rambling , usially becouse the wind
the best setting is off , if you dont use amixer try to find someone that can adjust lo cut inside your cable for about 80-100 hxz thats enouth , the dvx doesnt have any lo cut on it input mike stage
the balance cable is good for long run and actually if you need phantom power to your mike , this is the only way to get it , it carry only one balance signal or 2 unbalance which francly you never will use :-)
the unbalance cable is good for short cable runs (few feet )
for good boom mike cable go for twisted par cable balancy connected , thats extrimly helps while you running over electrical lines and dimmers
regullar cable will suffur from more noise and hum if it run directly over the dimmer line
mixer - depends on the budget and your progjects , you need a tleast 2 input ( one input is not a mixer -but 2 already is :-))
there is 500$ dv-mix from psc that not good enouth for me but many people decler different - i dont blame them .they never heard cooper or sqn or sound devices
the sd mix pre is avery nice small mixer , dont have line inputs or mike outs
for small eng that good enouth , exelent preamps , very good limiter about 650 us
wendt x2 betetr then sd , allittle bit bigger , bettermicrophonee powering , mike line outs abou t950-1000 new
sd-302 -thats the most bang for the buck you can get 3 inputs -perfect sound , very small size about 1200us
now since you are on the budget , there are few secend hand that you can go for
shure 33 -around 700-900us
wendt 2 -2 input mixer around 700-750
wendt 4 4 inpiut -around 1000
now for dont touch mixers
rolls 442
filmteck ( thats exellent mixer with allot of problems , you cant be sure that it will not die tomorw) very poular in england
shure 32a allot of problems with potinsiometers

all the prices are for US Without tax and shipping , the used ones from what i sow on the net , sometimes you can dfind aburgent on e-bay or loose your money :-)
