Sound issues

So i am using a DSR-300 and i can't seem to get a good sound out of it due to lack of knowledge. I have an external mic and i am hooked up to a sound board when filming for school events. What should the front mic be set at? the hookup to the sound board? And does the sound boards volume effect what the camera picks up? I am also not sure what is a good level to look for in decibles. Sometimes it will be over and the sound won't other times it well. Any input would be great.

On the 300 I would set the camera mic to channel 2 and depending on what you recording you could set it to auto. The feed from the sound board would go to channel 1(the left xlr on the back of the camera). I cant remember were the line, mic and phantom switches are on the 300 but you need to find them. Then ask you sound tech if they are feeding line or mic level. You need to have the camera switched to what they are feeding... If they are feeding line level and you are mic level your audio will be way to hot unusable, if you are on line level and they are feeding mic level you audio will be way way to low to use. Another thing is the 300 gives you the option to be in mic or mic/48v(phantom power) mode. For taking sound feeds you want to be in mic mode. Leave the phantom off.

After that yes the board will control you feed level. So if you tech sends you a hot signal it will be hot at you camera. I tend to have them to be a little under on my feeds. This gives me more room to adjust the level with the camera dials. I would get to them early and get my feed. Depending on what is going on you feed could be the last thing they are thinking about. Plus you may need some kind of turn around to get the feed to you camera.

Hope this helps.
