sound fx library?

Where are you guys getting good quality sound effects? There must be a few tried and true CD / DVD sources that don't cost the world, for things like sirens, growls, ambient noise, running water, etc. etc. etc.

unfortunately tried and true generally does cost the world. I use the general 6000 series, and its a brilliant collection.

But it comes to individual little effects packs, they are so hit and miss - you just gotta listen and see. dont bother with cd store type packages, they're definately not designed with pros in mind, the quality usually sucks, and the effects are ancient.

you can try buying single effects online from sound dogs, or try doing a google search.. or maybe someone else can be more useful than me.

HOLLYWOOD SOUND EFFECTS or you can always use the sound effects from a movie trailer (at your own risk).

at your own risk being the operative word. personally, using effects that big budget movies have already used feels wrong to me. Hollywood edge stuff is great too.

Sound Ideas has some great libraries, including the 6000 series, as well as more specialized effects CD such as SCi-Fi, Ambiances, etc.

But sometimes recording your own will give you the exact sound you need as opposed to making a sound effect froma library work. Just depends on the situation and how much time you have.

As a rule, its always better to record your own effects. They will usually fit what you're trying to do much closer because they're custom built!

But sometimes its not practical. I do mainly short form narrative work, and i try to record as many original fx as possible, but i STILL use the 6000 series so much!

i have the fx libraries from wb, lucasfilms, bbc, hanna-barbera, etc. and i still can't find exactly what i need sometimes.....

The whole lucasfilm fx library? Surely not...

Nope, just some of it. It's not a huge set.

Someone else mentioned the General 6000 by Sound Ideas (?) above. This is the one that I use & I am, for the most part, very happy with it. It's not cheap (I paid $1,300... or rather, the station did!), but it's got a bit of everything in there.

It's no substitute for making your own, but sometimes there isn't the time/money/whatever.

I think of it in the same way that I do After Effects-- the General 6000 is a swiss army knife.

We use sound ideas 6000 series effects at school and they seem to be pretty good. Use them enough though, and you'll start to notice some effects that get used over and over again. In the end, for some things it's fine to use a library, for others, best to record your own. It just depends on the sound and the project in my opinion.

Yup, that was me that uses the 6000. Swiss army knife is a very good comparison, and you're right about the price, but they've worked for me!
