sound from inside a house

Im working on a scene where the protagonist approaches someones house. as he does, we hear loud music and screaming voices from inside the house. these sounds grow louder as protagonist approaches and of course are at loudest when the front door is swung open

How do i record these sounds and add them into the mix so they sound like they are coming from inside a house, growing louder...etc.

do I record the actors yelling and screaming, in a studio? on location? are there filters available to alter sounds

do i go for best possible recording then alter in post. if so, what techniwues are available?

record best possible on set, degrade later.

Add music later not on set.

Record the actors in the house screaming during the shot (or after)
easist way if this is all one shot, get the mic in the room the entire time.

Later in post before the door opens use EQ to "muffle" the audio while the door is shut. (take out highs/mids)

Use a subtle outside ambiance during the walk up to the door and fade it out to help with
the transition.

Important thing to remember when recording field audio, when actors are talking, screaming, mumbling, whatever they are meant to be doing, your goal is to record dialogue only, thats it. Everything else comes after.

Can you expand on this a little Noel? When you say "everything else comes after" what exactly do you mean by this?

He means that in film, the paramount goal is recording clean, intelligible dialogue. The ambient, music and sound effects are all added in post. In dance scenes, the actors are usually either not dancing to any music or there is a "rumbler" being used to just pump some super low bass sounds so that the actors can hear the beat and timing. The music is added in post.

The scene with the two female talent walking across a room with a marble or wooden floor as they speak? They are probably barefoot or in socks unless its a wide shot where you see their feet and even then, the sound mixer has probably put special pads on the bottom of their shoes to muffle the clack of the shoes on the floor. The footstep sounds are put in post during the audio edit.

It's all about the dialogue and recording it as clean as possible. The rest is all post.

yea nothing like putting foot foam on 20-30 extras walking down a hall *groan* (just did that on the last feature i was on)

It's tough to get actors to take their shoes off, its good to have sound blankets nearby to throw on the floor and or floor mats you can keep rolled up and back on the truck.
