Sound editing

OK anyone know of any low price but useable sound editors? like ones that can manipulate audio, Dammage effects, vintage sounding, ETC. Also will a cheap program support 24P audio???? does that even make a difference?

Re: Sound editing

I use the combo of Vegas 5 and Sound Forge for my sound editing (well, and my video editing... ;-) ). There is a sub-board here specifically on Vegas you can check out. But, generally, Sound Forge will do all of the things you want to do (Vegas will do many of them too, built in). Vegas fully supports 24P, so you should have no problem. Can't comment on the other products out there.

I've heard good things about Pro-Tools, but now that Avid owns them, they haven't updated the free version, so I haven't tried it (they locked the install to only work with Win 98 and OS9).

Re: Sound editing

a friend of mine uses Adobe audition and swears by it. Apparently it has almost the same set of features as pro tools, and only costs like 300 bucks.

Auditon has a lot of nice features and filters for going for a damaged vintage sound, although it isn't quite spelled out like that. It works fine with 24p audio, but often the video preview will flicker, or be the incorrect aspect ratio, and often slow down so that it is off synch with the audio track, which means you need to stop and restart the timeline. That aside, I've been using Audition for about 2 years now, and I couldn't be happier with it, other then I wish there was an easy way to directly edit the audio track of an Avi. Clip (and save the changed audio to the original clip), but that's really easy to work around.

I swear by Audition as well. Frequency space editing anyone? I use it on all my productions, and clients haven't had any complaints yet.

Frames are for images. As in 24 images per second or 30 images per second. A second is a second long no matter how many pictures it takes to make up that second. So in audioland frames are an inconsequential measurement. At 24p a frame is actually .0416 seconds long. At 30p a frame is .033 seconds.
Did I confuse you even further than before. Sorry.
In other words no frames per second do not matter with audio programs.
If you have a MAC logic is a very nice high end audio app.
