Sound Devices Scorpio Mixer/Recorder : 16 Preamps / 32 Channels

Does it have the new Velvet Buttercream AKM ADCs? ;)

The epitome of all fluff and no substance. I spent the 80s in the world of high end consumer audio, I have rarely heard so much meaningless hyperbole and never seen so many Emporers New Clothes. At least Kashmir Pre-amps have a cool name. Velvet should be reserved for Costanzas track suit and red cake.

Really nice specs and features, but the price tag is about 3000-4000$ outside of my budget. I guess I will have to settle for F8, 633 or MixPre-10...

Your MixPre3 has AKM Velvet Sound converters- sound OK? I looked but couldn't find any info for the Scorpio converters online- likely AKM?
I think they're doing their best to make their excellent chips sound good from a marketing angle and perhaps something is lost in translation?

Sound Devices

MixPre-3
ADC: AKM AK5576EN Velvet Sound

The 5576 gives an option to run it in a 6-to-3 mode which add another 3dB to the S/N and give it 124 dB instead of a single channel 121dB.

$7.4 each
$3.92 @1000

MixPre-6
ADC: AKM AK5578EN. The MixPre-6 is built on the same architecture as the MixPre-3 but is using the 8 channel ADC AK5578.
And then utilizing the 8-to-4 mode which would add 3 dB S/N and give it a 124 dB range.

MixPre-10
ADC: 2 x AK5578

The MixPre10T is using 2 ADC, one for each side of the input groups. They are setup in a 8-to-4 mode like the smaller MixPre3/6 are and therefor add an additional 3dB of S/N and end up with a 124 dB range.

A friend has Bowers & Wilkin's level gear and associated monoblocks and who knows what else (built into a wall in his living room). He sold hi-fi gear in college. My relatively cheap modded Stax electrostatic earspeakers with the low-end 'energizer' driven by a Sound Devices USBPre2 sounds better haha (hard to compete with the physics of the electrostatic design). They're not very pretty though.

These sure do look pretty (or not depending on taste):

Only $60K per pair (there are speakers on the market that cost way more- it's art at that price. One example: https://sightandsoundgallery.com/products/focal-grand-utopia-em-floor-standing-speakers .

Interesting, I didn't know that's what the velvets were and that they were in my Mix Pre 3. The Mix Pre 3 certainly sounds good, I just hate those naming conventions. And I think the Kashmir preamp name is cool but I was always a huge Led Zepellin fan ;-)
