Sound Devices 702t users...

I need help. I just bought one and have a auto race comming up next weekend that I intend to record engine sounds with. My question is in your opinion what presets etc. would you set the unit at? If you were going to do this whould steps would you take? Thank you in adavance for any help.

saneproductions-I am as new to this as one can be. The only mic I have so far is a Neumann Km 184 Condenser. It will work for now from what I understand.
I'm in plans to get a shotgun but not in time(by this next weekend).

Oleg 2-Low gain okay.

Thank you both.Any more suggestions?

Set the two channels on different level, get yourself 6db headroom on one channel, the KM184 is very quiet and the 702 too, so you can do that without noisy floor. use the low cut filter, the old KM184 is very sensitive to RF ( new models are not, now they are extremely well shielded)

rafaeldelauz-Thank you. Please keep any suggestions comming. I will be checking this thread feverishly for the next week. Thank you all.

You are welcome to call me Mike...

You will need some kind of wind protection in order to use the mic outside. You will also need shock mounting. A good solution would be the k-tek k-zepp since you will be able to use it later with your shotgun.

If you don't have a boom you also need some kind of hand grip:

Here is the boom I suggest, a 12' gitzo carbon fiber.

Before you buy any more microphones, do some research... or just skip that and get a sanken cs3e for $1200 and not worry about it.

You may run into trouble overdriving that microphone with the loud exhaust of the cars.

overloading the mic pre, you can get a 10db pad to use inline. Don't use it unless you have to or you drive up noise. Other thing to do is have the mic farther away which may not be ideal. I am not sure what you are doing and don't do much effects work. may want to bring a dynamic mic if you want to mic race car exhauset close... ptalsky knows more about this kind of thing.

You may need an xlr barrel extender to make the short mic work in the k-zepp. The other option is to get the rycote bbg, furry jammer and k-tek kssm. see the other list I gave you.

$1200... just guessing price... sorry more like $1300 probably.
