Sound Devices 702T + 552 for four discrete recording tracks?

I've gotten the 702T to start record on both units, and can get a digital output from the 552 to the 702T. The problem is that I'm not sure how to disable to recording of channels 3 and 4 on the 552 so that they are just sent to the 702T and not recorded on the 552. The whole idea behind this is to get four discrete recording tracks for recording four mics onto separate channels, but be able to hear everything through the 552 when monitoring. Is this even possible?

First, please don't use black text - it's hard to read.

If I understand you correctly, what you want to do is record four separate channels using the 552 and the 702 (two in each), but monitor them all on the 552?

Unfortunately, I don't think this can be done with only those two machines (but I would like to be proven wrong). The 552 records the left and right mix only - you can't choose to not record a track and thereby still hear it while hearing the others. If you hear it, you record it, or you don't hear it, and you don't record it.

The options:

1. Connect two mics to the 552, and two mics to the 702, and then connect a stereo output from the 702 to the rtn input on the 552. Now you are recording 4 channels, and you can use the rtn switch on the 552 to hear either the 552 channels, or the 702 channels, but not both at the same time.

2. Set the direct outputs to pre-fader, go direct out from channel 3-4 on the 552 into the 702, and keep the faders down on 3-4 (or simply mute them). Now they won't be recorded on the 552, but you can still solo them for monitoring (I think, but I don't have the unit in front of me now), or use the rtn from the 702 as described above. This has the added benefit of controlling the gain for all channels on just the 552.
Again, it doesn't allow you to monitor all channels simultaneously.

3. Connect the headphone outputs/mix outputs of both the 552 and the 702 to a third mixer, headphone amplifier, or split cable, and monitor them both that way. Requires additional equipment and depending on the options on it, might be a bit messy with controlling the relative volume, but it will allow you to monitor both at the same time.

If I missed something, someone please correct me.
