Sound Devices 702 question

I have a Sound Devices 702 recording device. Something I'd love to be able to do during interviews is use one lapel microphone, but record one channel high and one channel low. That way, if the subject has an abrupt volume change, I'd be able to use the lower gained channel.

I know this was possible on the HVX200 (I could record 2 tracks at one gain level, and 2 tracks at another gain level.) Is this possible on the Sound Devices 702?

If not possible in-device, would it be possible using a cable like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/134134-REG/Comprehensive_XLRJ_2XLRP_3_Pin_XLR_Female_to.html

Hmm, I would call Sound Devices, but I don't think you can route one input to two faders. You can however split your signal, but you will loose volume and decrease your signal to noise ratio. Then you would be boosting it with the SD702. However, this is probably something you could try (just to see if the noise level is low enough for you) out if you have a friend with the splitter.

I think my biggest question though, is how loud is someone yelling, and why aren't you trimming your fader's and letting the limiter keep things in check from being clipped? In my opinion the limiter on the 702 is amazing. Let it do it's job, while you do yours right?

If you are not monitoring audio, or need to be away from the bag to film, I would just set it low and let the 702 do it's job, then adjust in post. The post workflow for that, is probably just as complex as the 1 mic for 2 channels setup. Not sure if that helps, but it is my .02 c (and I own the 702)

Your best bet if you can't be around your gear and there are going to be large ranges of dynamics is to set up for your loudest peaks. I would rather have parts of the audio mixed low and have to turn it up than have clipped or limited audio.
