If I'm shooting a movie in what instance would I need a 302 over a mixpre. Considering it a low budget film, will I use 3 mics

you can do what Mell Brooks did , and get the only one sentence in the post
the 302 is a better product , but if you wont to save money you can buy wendt 3 and get the same resolts - the only thing you need is to know what are you doing
if you intend to use more then 2 mikes in the shot the mixpre or other 32 input mixer wouldnt give you what you need, of course you can go directly to the camera with one mike - you may -and it even could work sometimes
only on location and after you would brake your movie to the shots you do , you could know if you need more then one or 2 mikes - but like all things in life thetre is abig difference betwin what are you intend to do and what actually you will do on the set
