I also have been pretty happy with my pmd661 purchase (I got a modded oade brothers piece). Preamps are really very good. I'd say in that price range it's a toss up between the fostex fr2le and the pmd. For not too much more you can go with the Oade mod. Having used both, the biggest annoyance of the pmd is simply the shape, which makes it hard to ride levels if you're doing both the booming and mixing. It's meant more for journalism than film sound recording. With that being said, I prefer it in every other way to the Fostex.
