Hi, I've just received the sound devices 302. I've got the AG DVX100A and ?'ve read all the information in the posts about mixers but I still doubt about the right way. For adjust the tone level for dialogs (for exemple) what's the correct way?.
Any advices more for beginning? In one month I'll start a work and it's my first experience with a mixer.
Thanks a lot. ;)

There's no hard and fast rule when it comes to this. It's going to vary from one situation to the next. Typically, you may want to roll off some low end when doing interiors to help get rid of rumble.

Re: Sound Devices 302+Panny. First Advices

I'm very confused. If a send the tone from the mixer to the panny and select two red bars I need up the levels of the fader channel and gain level until the mid of the buttons (both of them) for obtain the right input signal. I can ear the signal OK in the headphones to the mixer, but if i put the headphones directly to the panny the signal is very saturated (and then if I ear the recording is the same: a bit saturated.
I obtain best results upping raising the input levels of the panny (I send the tone and select four, even five, red bars) and getting down the levels of the gain and fader in the mixer (only half a quart). It's like the preamps in the panny were better than the mixer ¿? And when I record the same dialogue (for exemple) directly to the panny (without mixer) the recordings sounds better (or recording with the mixer putting the input signal up to five red bars -the tone- and getting down the gain an fader levels in the mixer). :( I think I'm not doing something well
Thanks for the advices. ;)

Could be the problem the output from the mixer? Maybe is something hot because if you hear the dialog from the headphones mixer it sounds OK but if yoy change the headphones to the panny's headphoness output the dialog sounds a bit distorsion and bit higher.
I need find a solution.
Thanks. :)

If you haven't already, switch the little audio switch in front of the camcorder from MIC to LINE. With your new mixer, you're now feeding LINE to the camcorder, not MIC.

Also be aware that the Auto Level Control (ALC) is defeated when using LINE input. It won't work even if it says that it's on. It only works for MIC input so you must now always monitor levels very closely to avoid clipping and the resulting distortion.

I hope that fixes it,

each red or white bar is is 2 dbfs ,  calibrate your camera line input as -18 dbfs - is a3rd  white bar
the alc  is  working on line input as welll(  dvx 100 pal A vertion ), its kick on -6dbfs .
ride the picks at least +6- +8 db on the mixer( pick miter scale !!!) , it would leave you with 10 db headroom for un expected picks , place the output limmiter around 14-15 db
for better monitoring from the camera use the rca outs and not the shitty headphones ampl

Re: Sound Devices 302+Panny. First Advices

Resolved!! :D Thanks a lot!! I had switch "MIC", I have proved changing "MIC" and "LINE" but hearing the headphones in the mixer (and there no was a change but if put the headphones in the camera I realized my error). Thanks! ;)
Oleg, If I calibrate the line input as -18 I've to get up more the input level in the mixer to get a good input signal in the camera. Yoy say it's good for dialogs,no?
By the way I've read for dialogs it's better select the high-pass filters in the camera, even at 160 Hz. Do you recommend this?
Thanks

Re: Sound Devices 302+Panny. First Advices

what does the calibration on the mixer have with the camera input , the line level from the mixer is 0dbu or +4 db ( that depends what do you deside , i run o dbu with dbfs scale camera ) ,so its much better to rise it up and handle on the mixer stage , keep the picks ( pick mitter around the +10 db , the uv will show about +2,+4 ) it would live you 8db for unexpected sound ,
to cut the sound around 160? why ??
read less idiotic statments ,
if you can record 20- 20 do it , if you hear to much handle noice of your booman you can cut around 80 , over that it start to be telephone line
