im trying to acheive the "telephone" sound for a dialogue track. what is the best way to replicate the muffled, scratchy sound of someone talking over a telephone?

if it comes down to it, i would be willing to just record the person speaking through a telephone, but what would be the best possible way to record that?

My personal 'secret' method of getting this done. Record what you want and import the audio into Sound Forge. Then open the effects and apply the 'chorus-cheap tv' setting. Adjust until you are content, but it perfectly replicates the telephone thinness you are looking for. Works like a gem everytime.

Telephones have a very limited bandwidth--maybe 3 kHz or so, ranging from about 400 Hz to 3.4 kHz. Use your equalizer to roll off everything below 400 Hz and above 3.4 kHz. That's usually a good start, and you can play with the cut offs until it sounds good (or bad) to you.

What he said.

I have a "phone" filter in my waves gold bundle that I use.

What NLE are you using? Vegas has a Telephone present in one of the EQ plugins...I believe it's the Graphic EQ plug-in. That's probably the easiest route as you can take care of the effect directly in the timeline without having to render a separate audio file.
