Sound Design for newbies

Hi all,

I am a sound recordist and have been for the last three years. A friend of mine has asked me to do some sound design for a show he DOPs and animates for. I recorded the dialogue for the show so I know all the audio is clean and clear and not much needs to be done with that. But he has asked me to get sound fx for transitions between animations, also between shots and license free music to play underneath some segments. I was wondering where some good sources are for license free music and also for sound effects and is there ways to generate sound effects through Ableton or Pro Tools? As some sounds that are needed between animation transitions would all be computer type sound effects, so no recording would be needed. Does anyone know any good sources where I could learn how to generate these sound effects in Pro Tools?

I thank you in advance for your input and replies.

Your working more as the sound supervisor/ editor than as a sound designer. It doesn't make that much difference but if you might want to do this professionally at some point you may want to go for the former rather than the later. Every kid with a Fisher Price microphone is calling them selves "sound designer" these days and so the title is HEAVILY discounted especially if you don't have a track record.

Yes there are a number of programs and plugins that will let you synthesize sounds. Or take a sound and warp it to the point where it sounds synthesized. But it's a little like asking what tool helps you make a movie. There are a million ways to get there and how you do it depends on you and what exactly you are trying to do. "Computer type sounds" is a HUGE field that could contain just about anything except nature recordings, and who knows maybe even that???

As to music and free FX this is a common question and there are excellent answers in the stickies. The short answer is yes there are many sources and some may work for you.

you could find some usefull things on www.freesound.org and "freeplaymusic" (or something like that)

and when it comes to sound design, look what's best...whooshes, swish, drones, beeps, transformers, electrical stuff,....
