Sound Consistancy

What is the best way to may the sound in a video i just shot stay at a consistent volume?

What i mean by this is that i shot a video an just used the onboard mic because that was all i had available at the time. When i started roughing the footage together one of my biggest issues is the difference in sound from each clip. I filmed in a coffee shop and im sure any time i change the direction of the camera it would pick up different sounds and such but the lack consistency is really noticable.

Any suggestions?

This isn't going to help much but the way it's done on a film with a budget is that you boom (or use lav's) and get as close to only getting dialog as possible. The dialog editor works to get rid of everything but the dialog and then the FX editors add all the backgrounds etc. In you situation it's hard to say what would help the most but you might be able to get rid of the dead air between words etc and minimize the background enough that adding a BG track would get you back to a consistent background shot to shot. But it might not work depending on how much is sitting on the dialog and you have to fill in all the places you cut stuff out with room tone or you will hear that coming and going. There is no easy way to fix this situation.

There's no magic solutions that let you "fix it in post." Learn from this the importance of taking the time and paying attention to the details to get it right when you're shooting. I know I'm going to sound like your 8th grade English teacher but the lack of attention to the details that shows in the lack of proper case and punctuation in your sentences ("...i shot a video an...") also leads to the rude surprise you've found in your audio. The devil lives in the details.

Thanks to both of you.

I can see that you both speak from a lot of experience so I will use the advice.

also check your NLE audio features, you might have a filter that will batch adjust all your audio levels.

but the easiest is still to have a soundie w/ a good field mixer paying attention to the levels as you shoot.
