sound cards and premiere pro

does it matter what sound card I use with premiere pro. will it take advantage of a better sound proccesser so that my audio will render quicker or play smoother.

But does this still matter if you are not recording sound directly to your computer?

the sound card doesn't matter when it comes to rendering etc. a better sound card will give you more options in terms of input and output but will not effect your actual video in any way (except if you have terrible speakers in which case you will edit the audio to sound like crap).

If you want to spend money on sound buy a good mic and some good studio monitors.

I guess your initial intent was to find out if a sound card would improve quality, and I believe what mor10 said is correct.

However, the point I was making was that there are compatibility issues between some sound cards and PPro so you need to make sure that which ever card you choose to upgrade to is an approved card.

I just use the Audigy card that came with my Dell and use an Alesis 100 watt amp with Alesis monitor one's and it sounds great.

Dear EGP,

If you've already recorded the video/audio and are inputting a composite signal, then as far as I know the sound card is not necessary (except for you to listen to during editing). It's not as though the A/D and D/A circuitry in a sound card is used by Premiere when it already has the audio/video sound track. Of course, if you are going to be mixing in sound tracks (voice, music, foley effects), then of course the quality of the sound card's Analog to Digital circuitry is important; in that situation, many audiophiles avoid cards with onboard A/D circuitry. So to answer your question, the sound card has nothing to do with the rendering or smoothness of a composite signal.

Regards, Michael
